Just finished watching

Downfall was nicely done, it shows the German side of the war. However it's all in German so unless you know the language you'll have to read subtitles. Not that bad really.

Downfall (Der Untergang) was phenomenally good. Bruno Ganz gives one of the single best performances on screen. I read that many of the people that were there with Hitler and then saw Ganz's performance were simply blown away with how dead-on it was to the real Hitler.

Der Untergang is a must see movie IMO.

Hey since you seem to know a lot about these movies and stuff. Do you know if Band of Brothers can be found in HD-quality? It seems like I can only find it in DVD - not hd-dvd or blu-ray

it has been available in Japan on HD DVD for over a year now. quantities are extremely limited (and perhaps discontinued), and it's about $180 to import, iirc.

quality is great though. and there are English language tracks.

as for other great WW2 movies: Thin Red Line. people either love it or hate it. those who hate it are idiots, of course. so there you go

I prefer it over SPR any day, any way.

A joke. In light of the Holocaust, the answer "the jews" is simply not that funny. just avoid any WWII flick with John Wayne in it...

maybe it's just me, but standing on a PT boat with a perfectly pressed and starched uniform while you are under attack just doesn't seem very realistic to me. His other WWII flicks are just as realistic and should be avoided at all costs...

I am not into Westerns so I have no recommendations for his roles in those movies....

I thought the question "who won?" was "who won the war?" I LOL-ed at, "The Jews" answer because it was so wrong and shocking.

And then I went :Q because making light of the holocaust is very much a taboo thing. I expected the "I'm so offended" posts that followed.

Am I an anti-semite? I don't believe I am. Am I a bad person because I laughed at the response? I don't think so. Does the response make light of the holocaust? Again, I don't think so. It brought to mind how horrible things were for the jews, how much they were the losers. It did not minimize the suffering, but served as a reminder.

In other words, I don't think getting offended and trying to stifle such speech is a good thing, but that allowing people to discuss the holocaust in different ways can be helpful.

Others may disagree with me on every point and think I'm a bad person, an anti-semite and discussion of the holocaust in any way except by hushed tones with a serious look on ones face is wrong. To those people I will be insulting and say: pull the stick out of your ass.

Saving Private Ryan to BoB is not a fair comparison in absolute terms. SPR was limited to a movie length. Imagine if they tried to cram all of BoB into a 2.5 hour (or even 3 hour) running time.

Both are outstanding.

Other must sees, listed or unlisted here :

Thin Red Line (great ensemble, much more artistic than SPR, not as visceral)
Das Boot (see the newer recut, it's an astonishing piece of work, and much better than any other 'sub' movie ever)
The English Patient (all the 'romance' angles aside, it's an exquisite piece of WW2-era visuals and conflicts)

HBO is slowly releasing their original series on Blu-Ray, it'll only be a matter of time before BoB comes on that format.

Not as good, but pretty close.
Tora Tora Tora is also worth watching.

And Black Hawk Down is arguably equivalent if not better than SPR. Not WW2 based, but an awesome movie.
