Fires on the Plain - I doubt many people have the err... appetite for this movie but I liked it so much I bought it.

I did.

Black Hawk Down is a good movie, but an absolutely astonishingly great book. So much was left out of the movie, or just glossed over or exaggerated, that it does a serious disservice to the material.

I'm surprised no one mentioned 'Platoon'? I watched bits and pieces of it for the first time ever last week. Some of it is pretty powerful........and disturbing.....

Probably because the OP recommended 'WW2' theme films/shows.

A lot of people have derailed this somewhat by mentioning other, often fine, sometimes not, works.

Platoon is a great film slightly skewed by Charlie Sheen's presence. It's distracting almost to see him in a serious role after a couple of decades of comedy.

He asked if there were other WWII movies/shows that compare with Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. I answered honestly, no. I DO think none other compare with those two.

Why don't you contribute something to the thread of just stfu, asswipe.

Also, Von Ryan's Express, Kelly's Heroes, The Great Escape - all great WW2 flicks.

The Pianist

Although warfare was not its primary focus, there were good urban combat scenes.

but then you asked who won.

A joke. In light of the Holocaust, the answer "the jews" is simply not that funny. Of course, I let it go, but then mugs thought it was SO funny that he simply had to make a post and stick his grinning, uh, mug, in there. So, stunned by his going out of his way to be that ignorant, I asked him why. Non-hilarity ensued.

Jeez, just drop it Perknose. You're like trying to find ways to keep this arguing going.

Why are you picking on mugs anyways? Why don't you go after xylitol for making the comment that you are so offended by?

Ah good catch, yes another extraordinary film.

An important question to those looking into these kinds of films is whether or not they're really all that concerned about the combat scenes themselves. Personally, I don't think anything on the level of SPR/BoB will be, or even needs to be made in that area. But the surrounding dramatic elements can be incredibly potent for filmmaking, look at Der Untergang.

Oh, man, yes! The German actor who played Hitler was mesmerizing. That is a great film, imho. I think the English title was Hitler's Final Days or some such. Well worth watching!

Actually, it was called 'Downfall', but 'Hitler's/3rd Reich's Final Days' was definitely in the marketing of the film.

Interesting, if you're curious about this subject matter :

Joachim Fest, whom wrote the documentary works that contributed to the film itself, has a fantastic history in documenting the major personalities of the 3rd reich.

Of particular interest are :

Inside the 3rd Reich, 1970, by Albert Speer w/Joachim Fest
Speer : The Final Verdict, by Joachim Fest, 2002

A spectacular inside view of both madmen and ordinary people caught in the runaway machinery of fascism and world war.

Don't miss Swing Kids for a view from the german youth on the nazification around them.

Con: no battle scenes, but a few fights and lots of dancing
Pro: cameo by the pope

I was also fond of the TV series Combat!

Hey since you seem to know a lot about these movies and stuff. Do you know if Band of Brothers can be found in HD-quality? It seems like I can only find it in DVD - not hd-dvd or blu-ray

Oh and thanks for the list - i'll probably check em out on Netflix

? it was broadcast in hd

for war commentary and overall great film-making shot during the final days of WW2 during German retreat, look to Rossillini's "Roma, Cita Aperta" (Rome, Open City). first of his "true" neoclassical trilogy, the other two are also pretty damn incredible.

"Germania Anno Zero" is probably my favorite. Portrays the often untold story of what life was like in Germany after the fall of the Third Reich. Great commentary on how Hitler rose to power, the crushing guilt that the average German citizen feels for allowing the Nazi rise to power.

good stuff

18 different characters with detailed stories does not make for a concise and effective 2-hour movie. details have to be compromised, characters created by merging several into one, etc.

I still don't understand why people don't grasp these concepts. Telling a story through a novel /= telling a story through film.

I forgot: the author of the book wrote the first draft of the screenplay. It saw a lot of changes for sure, but he approved them all. At least the author knows something about writing screenplays, heh.

Yeah, I agree, compromises always have to be made, but I wish it had gone 'Band of Brothers' instead of '2 hour action movie'.

a day long siege seems a bit of a stretch for a mini series. I liked BHD, but never thought it was the tits that everyone at AT proclaim it is. I recognize the badassness of it, what these soldiers really went through and all, but as far as a film goes, I would never put it up there with others.

It's a whole bunch of shooting, more or less. I find that Tears of the Sun has more rewatchability for a war-type film of the same era (fake, sure...but watching those guys eff-up some evil bastards never gets old)

Oh, I think BHD could have had potential for maybe 4 or 5 1-Hour episodes at least. I remember being shocked reading the book and how only a scant amount of the contents made it to the screen.

There was this one movie I saw on TV many moons ago... it was about WW2 complete with japanese dive bombers, an attack on pearl harbor, some guy coming back onto a US Aircraft Carrier with plane that barely flew, this one scene with japanese navalmen looking across at two of their ships on fire in the horizon, and lastly some line that said something of "I will apologize to his majesty..." or something like that. Can anyone identify this movie- it was really good back in the day.
