Yes, because it was out of left field, which I think was the best way to respond to your post. .

He asked if there were other WWII movies/shows that compare with Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. I answered honestly, no. I DO think none other compare with those two.

but then you asked who won.

A joke. In light of the Holocaust, the answer "the jews" is simply not that funny. Of course, I let it go, but then mugs thought it was SO funny that he simply had to make a post and stick his grinning, uh, mug, in there. So, stunned by his going out of his way to be that ignorant, I asked him why. Non-hilarity ensued.

I just recently finished rewatching BoB myself - absolutely fantastic. I wish there were more films/shows that matched up with BoB/SPR but it just isn't so.

That one scene in saving private ryan where that german dude stabs that one guy to death and he's just goin "shhhhhhhhhh" always gives me the fucking creeps. It's like whenever TNT airs it I happen to flip past it RIGHT at that exact moment, and then I can't sleep for a week. Then TNT airs Saving Private Ryan again, lather, rinse, repeat.

Yeah that part always really, really upset me when I was younger

Seriously, those two are great actors. That scene creeps me out to the point where I think I'd be LESS creeped out seeing someone actually die in front of me.

The fact that TNT loves airing Saving Private Ryan doesn't help at all. I swear to God it's like every time I'm at my parents and I actually have cable to enjoy, I flip past TNT and they're showing that damn scene.

Well that being said, nothing creeps me out more than Natural born killers, the whole freaking movie!

Yeah, no prob, that's what I figured. I had no problem with your response, just mugs chiming in, given, you know, the Holocaust and all.

Edit: And, really, you have seen the two best already, imho, but I do think you might like Clint Eastwoods duo about the American assault on Iwo Jima, first from our side and then from the Japanese side.

back on topic... I never thought Saving Private Ryan was all that great. BoB however was a masterpiece. Other good war movies: Black Hawk Down, Letters from Iwo Jima, The Battle of Midway,

SPR was good, but the storyline was rather weak. In terms of battle scenes, it is unparalleled. Band of Brothers is a phenomenal series. Only the most cold hearted demon doesn't get teary eyed during the documentary at the end of the series.

Letters From Iwo Jima and Flags of Our Fathers were both really good too.

Personally, and I know most people think it is garbage, I love The Thin Red Line.

Don't forget about Schindler's List.

Xylitol -

I had a day off from work once, and I had the day planned out.....it was to be a productive day....until........this showed up on the screen.

This damned show stole that day....and stole it swiftly. My wife and I were glued to the TV from 10 am - 10 pm, and never thought about said plans.

It is a documentary, but real people who fought the war tell the story....and it is amazing. I hear that the civil war one is better.....anywho.....hope you enjoy it.

Band of Brothers is available in HD DVD, I'm pretty sure.

nvm - I found out. It's available in limited quantity in Japanese. I'll just wait until the American version is released in Blu-Ray this year. For now, I'll keep watching the hd-quality band of brothers that I got from my friend until I can buy my own copy when it's released in blu-ray (I mean, I want to support the studios who made this miniseries possible).

BOB is available in HD... but not legitimately.

It was ripped from a 720p broadcast in Germany IIRC

1080p. It looks damn fine.

Try Bridge over the River Kwai: http://imdb.com/title/tt0050212/ 8.4/10, top 64th movie
Or Lawrence of Arabia: http://imdb.com/title/tt0056172/ 8.6/10, top 32nd movie

Yup.. best war movie I've ever seen.. of course the Oscar judges thought a 3rd rate movie about Shakespeare being in love was better but meh..

Another pretty good film that is not very well known is Saints and Soldiers, based on the Malmedy Massacre. There's also Windtalkers and We Were Soldiers if you haven't seen those yet. I'm not claiming that any of these are as good as the ones you've just seen, but still pretty good.

Band of Brothers pwns it on all fronts IMHO.

I was also fond of the TV series Combat!

Hey since you seem to know a lot about these movies and stuff. Do you know if Band of Brothers can be found in HD-quality? It seems like I can only find it in DVD - not hd-dvd or blu-ray

Oh and thanks for the list - i'll probably check em out on Netflix

Don't believe that HD was around when they were pressed. I highly doubt that they went back and re-did them.

Any news on the mini-series about the Pacific Theater that the group that made BoB are working on?

My opinion of SPR has gone down over the years. It just comes off as too contrived.

I would add "Patton" and "The Great Escape" to your list.
