Just found a car I'd like to have, and it is domestic.

I am going to get flamed for this LOL!

I've been looking at the Cadillac Seville SLS/STS model '98 and later. Damn, I like those.
Looks great, nice ride (most likely) and it is within reach.
A '98/'99 with higher mileage can be had for <$14k. I can probably get 4k trade in +2k down payment breaks down to $270/month @ 36 months.
:Q

Have I lost my mind?

Nah, those are decent rides. Some nice get up and pretty comfy. It's not something I'd get but I can see the appeal.

Is Plymouth considered domestic?

I'd like to have a Plymouth Laser.

Only if you get a N/A car. Otherwise it's a Mitsu motor and its domestic status is lost

I am old and love them, but they are for the young too. The Northstar engine is outstanding ... I have one in a Caddy and one in an Aurora. Speedo on the Aurora runs to 140 and I imagine it will do that. Yest on a deserted road I hit about 95 and the tach was at about 2900 rpm. Fun rides. Milage is very good on the hwy with my average 25-26 mpg. Town not good at about 16-17 maybe. But, repairs can be very high, If you get one, buy a good extended warranty. Example: Replace oil pan gasket on Caddy Deville Northstar, about $2300. Replace radiator on Aurora, over 600. On Sevilles, the suspension can be a killer, since each strut or whatever is about 600.

I rented a Deville a couple of years ago on a trip to Florida.

LOVED the car. Nice handling, GREAT engine, controls perfectly placed. And, I like the looks, too.

Anything specific to look out for?

Not really, except be sure to check out the suspension since that can be a 2400 job (maybe less by now). Also, be sure it is absolutely leak free (oil, coolant, pwr steering fluid, etc.). My Northstar in my Aurora has under 60k miles and I have had to replace the rear main seal, then another minor leak, and now perhaps the headgasket. That adds up fast. In the Caddy, I have 86k miles and so far have had to replace air conditioner compressor at 60k, the ignition switch at about 65, and the water pump at about 80k. My service rep had told me that the water pump would go about then. If you know anyone you trust, I would have them go over everything with a finetooth comb. As I said, repairs are so costly, do get an extended warranty if at all possible. To be very frank, I would not recommend a very high milage Caddy or other American luxury car. Good luck.

Just a heads up.
Consumer Reports lists the Seville 95-02 as a used car to avoid.
That being said, If you like the car go for it.
Just be prepared to spend a litte more on upkeep.

Thanks for the answers. I figured a car with all these gadgets will fail and be expensive.
I'll hold off for a while.

I don't know who is your mechanic, but as a mechanic, I wish I could charge what you are saying YOU pay. Struts for a 99 Aurora are around $70-80 each. rad. is $350 give or take, etc..... And $2300 to replace oil pan gasket on a northstar... PLEASE be my customer, damm I can use the EXTRA cash.

The engine on a Caddy is bullet proof, IF it is taken care off. Teh really biggest thing is electrical problems. But any car with just about every option is bound to have some.

Find a one that has been taken care of and you will be good to go.
