Decided to do a little wire management work in my receintly "completed" box; fan leads were tangled about so I cut/soldered the wires shorter to tidy things up some.

Reboot...fans spins...no POST.

Several hours later I found the problem, a solder drip splashed down in my memory, Crucial Ballistix 512, and shorted out the stick taking out the motherboard

Boy do I feel DUMB:brokenheart:

Can't rightly RMA because this clearly was my fault.

Memory - $140
MSI 8KN Neo - FSR - $115

Live and learn.

RMA the Mobo, MSI has more money than you I'm sure.

I truly believe that companies factor in that people who tinker with thier machines will screw up.

I am sure that they would rather have a happy customer than the few dollars it costs them to replace the part. (remember alot of parts are mf in China)

Hi,

My name is powerMarkymark. I will be elsewhere for a week on my speaking tour as a strong advocate for committing fraud as a way to encourage manufacturers to provide strong technical support and, in light of the recent election, to improve the moral character of people and businesses everywhere.

I'm not the moral police, but I'd edit that out if I were you, some people around here take quite a bit of offense to comments like that, and some of the people are mods.

Fraud is not an appropriate suggestion.

And sorry about your loss Nessism, but good job on taking responsibility for it. Far too many people these days are amoral weasels willing to trade in their integrity for even a small amount of money.

As stated before, can't RMA since it was my fault.

Next question is, what motherboard should I get to replace the MSI? Honestly, the board has been OK but I'm not too excited to spend over a hundered dollars when an Epox is quite a bit less.

Any thoughts?

Thats not the point, I hate seeing my prices go up because people like you RMA stuff they screw up. If you break it you should eat the cost, not the manuf

jpeyton is recoomending the Epox and a Chaintech in the System thread at the top of GH, so feedback on it must be pretty good.

Most of the reviews on Newegg are 5 stars too, except for a person trying to install a newer A64 on the board back in Septermber:
"I tried to run this mobo with a 3200+ 1Mb (DTR) and "29" would show up on the debug port LED and it wouldn't post. I RMA'd the board and my new one did the same thing. Apparently, the BIOS that comes loaded on the mobo can't recognize the DTR chip's microcode. I will have to try and run it with a desktop CPU to flash the BIOS and hopefully make it compatible with my DTR chip. "

UPDATE

Pulled the board and found a pinhead sized dollop of solder between two DIMM slots sitting DIRECTLY on top of two small component pins. Flicked the solder loose and what do you know, it LIVES:Q

Now it looks like the total loss is just the memory. The memory may even be repairable; looks ok except for one small component got taken out by the solder.

At any rate, I feel a little better now

So you never go past the speed limit huh?

Breaking man's agreed upon by non-majority voted laws is still breaking the law. There are so many on the books that everyone has broken one..it comes down to being caught and what $$ gain/example set is garnered by the judicial/law enforcement est. for the majority of these laws.
Nessism glad you have integrity.

Going a little quickly is breaking the law and causes accidents which in turn kills people.

I give money to charities all the time and occasionally the homeless.

What is your point?

The law is the law, The end.

If you go one mile over the speed limit - you accept the risks and consequences of willfully choosing to ignore a law that many people do try to abide by. Places don't grow legs and disappear - it will be there when you get there - and if you allocate enough time to get ready and leave, then there is really no reason or excuse for committing a moving violation.

It's my personal opinion that a lot of motorists speed because 'the other person is doing it' - This can be because they don't want to seem like a slow snail, and have everyone go around them, shoot them bad looks, etc - just because they're going the speed limit - or it could be because they figure 'Well, if X amount of cars around me are going 55 instead of 45 - then I'm entitled to as well' (And neither will be a working defense if you are pulled over..)

Laws categories tend to work in three ways. Felonies(Worst), Misdemeanor(Intermediate), and Civil Infractions (Light)

By talking about speeding here in comparison to fraud, we're comparing a Civil Infraction to at the least - a misdemeanor, and at the worst, a felony...though by definition here I'd have to say that this would qualify as the lesser of the two (Mis.). If you are caught speeding a small amount over posted zoned limits - then you face a CI - if you are caught committing fraud - even in small cases - you are risking a Misdemeanor charge.

Fraud and white collar crime is the #1 reason why consumers pay high prices when purchasing goods. Companies have to fight this problem somehow - and they do so by passing down the burden onto the consumers, not themselves. I'm not going to rag on powerMarkymark for the comment he made, but I would personally choose to go the path that takes responsibility. I may be out a little cash at the end of the day - but at least I will be able to go to sleep later that night with a clear conscience.. =)

Eat lead idiot.

The man here is someone of decent moral standards. I commend him on his honesty and good moral character. There aren't enough people like him these days.
