Just got a 3DS and...

Feeling a ping of disappointment with it. :\ I'm currently playing link between worlds, the reason I got the hand held and while it's a great game, the hardware itself seems less impressive. Surprisingly enough, I find I actually like the glasses free 3D. Maybe it's because it just feels fresh to me as I'm only now getting a 3DS, but I enjoy it despite the small annoyance of the picture going crazy the instant my eyeballs are not in perfect sync with the screen.

The dual screen however feels pretty pointless. Between Star Fox and Link Between Worlds all I'm seeing it do is fill the role of a map or a place for a text box. That's alright, I guess. But probably not worth doubling the size of the portable for. I find there are also a lot of things on menus I wish I could just select with the face buttons and analog stick/dpad that apparently can only be selected on the touch screen. It becomes very tiresome having to pull out the stylus to select Yes or No or to drag and drop a piece of gear to links roster every time I want to swap or change something. I've resorted to loosing my grip on the portable long enough to just tab these occasional annoyances with my finger instead, but that leaves smudges all over the screen. So unnecessary.

Then you have the weight. Oh my gosh! Maybe in hindsight I should have made do with a regular 3DS instead of the XL. (it seemed pointless to at the time now that XL units can be had for the same price of regular variants) But this thing is just plain tiresome to hold after a while. Holding it in one hand especially to use the stylus is even more tiring. Did Nintendo really design these things for kids? Judging by how pointless the bottom screen is, it seems like they could have almost halved the weight by ditching the other screen.

The whole necessity to put out the stylus to select a quick option on the touch screen once every few minutes feels like Nintendo is overthinking the problem more than they needed to. I miss when hitting the pause button and quickly moving a cursor over things with the d pad was so simple and effective, all without requiring me to reposition all my fingers front and back. Even shutting the thing off seems like more of a chore compared to my old DS Lite; before you just pushed up on a switch on the side. Now that switch toggles on/off the internet connectivity. To turn it off you have to hit the power button, pull out the stylus and confirm your intention on the touch screen. The whole thing feels bloated rationalization to justify the bottom screen.

Yes you got the XL so obviously the weight issue is because you bought the largest model. Also, you just hold the power button to turn it off. Also yes I hate having to have the touchscreen to do simple tasks but that's why I just push it with my thumb or finger, you don't have to use the stylus for simple things. I'm not much fan of the extra touchscreen but it's not that horrible.

Knowing Nintendo now that I bought an XL they're probably going to make an XL Lite that isn't so damn heavy to hold up with one hand while using the stylus.

The only things that bug me about the 3DS are the lack of a second thumb stick. You can get one through an adapter, which also includes more trigger buttons, but so few games use it. It would be nice if other games took advantage of it if you had it installed.

Another thing is the software. If you own a Vita and a 3DS, it's not hard to see that the Vita just feels more modern and user friendly.

I would assume that the XL isn't meant for kids.

I think my two biggest complaints about Nintendo handhelds is that they've never felt very ergonomic and they seem to be underpowered compared to the competition. I've held a friend's Vita and it fits in my hands so much better. Not to mention being more powerful and having a higher res screen. Unfortunately, the library just isn't there, so I don't see myself getting one any time soon.

i think touchscreen is used a lot in kid ikarus. i actually have a big backlog of games that i need to work through. that's one of them. i believe the boxed version comes with a stand for the system also. I agree most of the time it's used as a menu only. That would be great but in animal crossing, you can't even move around while your trying to mess with your inventory. the screen is frozen anyway.

it weighs a lot but the extra screen real estate makes a huge difference. also imo it enhances the 3d effect. The original 3ds doesn't really have great 3d. most of the time you're not going to use 3d though but the extra large fonts and screen space is nice.

I can't say I really thought about the things you mention. I have noticed the 3ds XL I have getting tiresome to hold after long sessions. I just close the lid and let it go to sleep mode. Come back later. This is only after 4hours or so of gameplay though so the battery is wearing down anyway.

I bought a 3DS XL for the same reason - Zelda. Even got the gold one. I guess it weighs a lot but somehow that never really bothers me... I may not play as long sessions as most players though - for me that happens on PS3. Portable gaming is much less frequent.

As far as the second screen, the usage (or lack thereof) is up to the game devs. I can't really hold that against Nintendo. I still think dual screens on a handheld is a good idea, especially due to lack of screen real estate compared to big modern tv's. And the fact that it closes up in that clamshell design makes the size cost of a second screen all but negligible

Another great thing about the clamshell design is how, like a laptop, you just close it to put it to sleep. Only reason my 3DS XL turns off is when I forget to charge it. Especially with the Street Pass stuff it does when in sleep mode, I have never found reason to turn it off. Silly as it may be, I get a kick out of trying to "meet" as many people as I can, collect the puzzle pieces, and see what other people play & what their mii's look like...

The Vita is a good piece of hardware but lacks the games. I've had a 3DS for a couple years now and despite the fact I drive everywhere and don't have a busride or any other natural time to use it, I make time to play it.

Reasons to buy one and keep playing it: Fire Emblem, Pokemon X/Y, Star Fox, Zelda and the soon to be released Smash Bros game.

Also the XL version is a very nice nod to the adult gamers out there, the regular 3DS screen is too tiny for my old man eyes.

Some of you guys must have girly limp wrists

Only complaint I got for the 3DS XL (and frankly most hand helds) is they are too goddamn small factoring in the method in which you would hold it. At least for me and my king kong hands, I get wrist cramps before fatigue.

It's like they took that godawful Dreamcast controller design and copied it. Parallel wrist placement? Eff that man!

I don't have gorrila hands but I still get fatigued wrists from holding it in the intended position.

It does get tiring but I can't offer a credible opinion because of my playing habits... (12+ hour binges)

I'd recommend a set of grips, I personally got these:

http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Ninte...8&qid=1398279630&sr=1-33&keywords=3DS+XL+GRIP
EDIT: Copied wrong Link. I use their brand for the PS Vita too.

Night and day difference. Your wrists are in a more relaxed position, you got plenty of plastic to support the full weight of the console in your hands, not just your fingers.

I got something similar for my PS Vita and while I can game without them, I'd prefer not to. Makes a big difference (for me at least.)

i forgot to mention that i do have a rocketfish case on mine. it makes the whole form factor a little grippier and imho easier to hold. you could look into picking up something similar. If I knew the hori case was so cheap, I probably would have gone with that instead. The only issue i have with the case is if I decide to buy the circle pad pro, i would have to remove it every time i use the cpp.

Back in my day, we had heavy brick-weight, spinach green-screened Game Boys and we liked it!

As a tiny little 6 year old asian, I sure had no trouble playing it for hours. We even added extra weight with things like the light attachment and still all good; it only meant we can play it in the dark for even more hours.

It's more holding it elevated up to your face and your neck fixed and not moving for hours lest you move something 1 mm and break the 3D effect.

Grip or no grip, holding my elbows at 90 degrees for hours without support gets old.

Can't count the times I've played half asleep and crossed eyed with triple images and not even noticing or caring.

Nintendo is being cheap and doesn't include physical copies anymore in bundles. Look for the download voucher or it will be pre-installed.

I have a 3dxl and both kids have dsi sl.

none of us have a issue playing it. Some games make good use of the 2nd screen some don't. i don't blame nintendo for that.
