Is there anything missing in terms of benchmark data and/or other.. Or is it already out there? It gets fairly hot.. To my surprise, it threw out a BSOD.. which now features a frowny-face.. How very Windows 8 of them. Child-ize everything.. including BSOD.

I also purchased the docking station.. which includes a displayport.. and does output to 4K (Samsung UDsomething).

Not a bad purchase.. If you think about it in terms of.. Bacon.. ~800$ item is 145.45 lbs of bacon today.. 4yrs ago it was 228.57; I think that is how I will quantify/justify all my future impulse tech purchases.. the cost in lbs of bacon. /tangent

Anyways.. If there is something that is unknown regarding this CPU/platform.. maybe I can find out.. I will open it up, I don't care.. I won't microwave it or blend or frisbee (well, frisbee maybe.. I don't like win8). It oddly does not seem faster than Z7340D in my Venue 8 pro..

Interesting. Is it the 0.8-2.0Ghz 5Y10a or 1.1-2.6GHz 5Y70 CPU? I wonder if part of the slowdown is due to pre-installed Dell OEM junkware and anti-virus.

Thanks for sharing. The Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140 is still quite new, so only little bits of information and benchmarks are floating around the internet from owners such as yourself.

A couple of other owners are posting on this forum, but information is still limited:

Link

Otherwise I'd be interested in some of the real world performance, as well as throttling. Maybe try running some games to see what it can handle, and if the performance suffers from throttling.

the slow down is probably because of first boot updates and getting settled, it'll be faster once all the updates are done.

Would really be interested in sustained performance tests under a couple of conditions.

1) Light ST CPU usage (aka looped sunspider).
2) Heavy MT core load (cinebench)
3) Heavy GPU usage
4) Combined (Games).

I'd like to know how long the battery lasts. I need an all-day lappy.

Oh I removed the AV right off the bat. Those things are more persistent than the 'spyware' they attempt to prevent. God this stupid keyboard is terrible; the Surface Pro like variety. It has a SanDisk X110 M.2 SSD, which makes me wish I bought the 128GB model... as write performance is most likely far better.. I have feeling this can be remedied/swapped.

I will get on some #s now.. With ideal/duplicate conditions.. I wish I could do some sort of overclocking (um, for fun? for glory?).. All I can do now is look at cpu-z report 14nm and think "oooh cool". I will try to force turbo with throttlestop if throttle stop even works!

You adjust inflation via bacon, I cannot see any fallacy in your method.

Well, I certainly can't rely on BLS random # generator! Bacon should be listed as a currency; just so all the fx traders can be reminded that the collective emperor has no clothes.. World Wide Weimar!

A user in the link I posted above shared their CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2 results for the 128GB model:

(read/write)
Seq = 403.5/228.8
512K = 206.5/158.1
4K = 21.12/37.24
4K QD32 = 250.8/177.1

I would like some gaming benchmarks I am curious what 5ish watt Intel 14nm is capable of with broadwell. Not something like 3d mark but whatever games you like, I am not picky.

I am just curious on its casual gaming potential.

I got my 7140 128GB on Tuesday. I also still have a 5130 since last year. Quick perspective on the 7140:

1. Only .1" thicker than the 5130 and fanless design.

2. I have tested games like COD 4, MTX vs ATV, Saints Row 3, Crysis 2 and Earth Defense Force. Of those only COD 4 would play at low settings on the 5130. The others were slide shows on the 5130 and unplayable.

3. 3D gaming can get real warm in the right top corner area of the back, but not hot like the the other V11 pro models or Surface Pro. Also not hot like the Yoga 2 and 3 Haswells. The games played great at medium settings and at 1280X720. EDF is a resource hog, so was surprised it played smooth. The 7140 performs FAR better for gaming than the 5130. Different level entirely.

4. Battery life is still to be determined, but appears on par with the 5130 but about an hour less gaming. I use the battery dock and get about 5.5 hours of battery life for 3D gaming and twelve not gaming so far (the gaming part could go up or down and hour depending on what games- duh).

5. Dolphin is an emulator that plays Gamecube games. The 5130 played at half the speed of the 7140. Most games that work on Dolphin are very playable now with the 7140. Impressive.

6. Wifi seems as robust and stable as the 5130 that is good.

7. Speaker output is adequate for a "laptop" and not quiet and tinny.

8. Display is very good and ditto for touch response (though I mainly use a bluetooth mouse and the keyboard dock).

I got the 5130 and intended it to be a backup PC and a mini me laptop for portable entertainment and gaming with maximum battery and portability. The 5130 did pretty good, but the 7140 fits as perfect as can expect with this type of device. The trade off of course would be more performance and less battery life if even better. The 7140 IMO has a near perfect balance. It will surprise folks how well this fanless device can play games. Again, this is from the perspective of a tablet size fanless device.

The 7140 is truly impressive IMO, with one issue to solve:

The one issue I have is sleep mode drain. It loses about 15% over eight hours. The 5130 about a third of that over the same time. Not acceptable and have to figure out what is causing it.

Added: Older games like Unreal 3 play smooth at 1080p and so did EDF, but that just drains the battery more quickly and adds to the heat. 720p for me is perfect for a device with a display this size. Can not stress how much better in performance the 7140 is over the 5130 with same fanless design.

Need to sell my 5130 now.... I frankly did not expect to be as impressed as I have been and fully expected to return the 7140 after comparing to the 5130 for a week or so. Wrong. Worth the $250 extra over the 5130 for the performance, twice the ram and twice the storage- if deciding on the two devices.

Thank you for the impressions. Any chance you can run some benchmarks or provide some FPS numbers for the game? This the 5y10 - correct?

My time was more practical since prefer that over benchmarks. Benchmarks are available for the 7140 though and linked in the Broadwell thread. The 7140 currently only has the 5y10 as an option.

I will test FPS with some games later this week. Some Steam games play with a black border around them. That is my main focus right now. Seems a common issue for some devices.

F1 Racing and Crysis 2 are examples. They do not scale to the display like most games do.

I think this may be a terrible first showcase for many people trying Core M. I had the Dell Venue 11 pro with Core 4300Y, it was a disaster. Even after a raft of updates attempting to fix it and 10 months on the market. Issues with not waking up, freezes, BSOD, and even occasional wifi issues. This was the 11.5 watt model with a fan, and heat did not appear to be the issue. I think Dell just did a shit job with their drivers/software for the "core" line of these tablets. The Baytrail version had zero complaints in comparison.

I tried every dell patch, every tip and trick I could find online and ended up returning the tablet, stylus, and battery dock for a refund. One of my worst tech purchase experiences ever.

I am not just here to bash dell, merely wanted to say their track record makes me leery of viewing this as a typical Core M experience.

Not sure what you mean with the 7140, but true to some degree with the fan based versions.

So far the 7140 seems like a Superman version of the 5130. Same fanless design and the antithesis of terrible. So far

So $800-1000 Core M Broadwell tablets are still slower than my $500 laptop from 2009. Good to know

As far as meat prices going up due to inflation, nah. Inflation is part of it but mostly its under-production due to over-regulation by government. Production of meat in the United States is about 1/6th of what it was in the 1940s. Domestic prices is mostly a symptom of self-inflicted wounds.

On what measure? I have hard time finding $500 laptops right now that will be as fast. And you'd be saddled with a low res display, spinning hard drive, and low battery life. I really don't see one from 2009 keeping up.

The laptop though is not as portable or nowhere near the battery life. Which is the point of these devices. Also a laptop at that price has an inferior display.

Not the same comparison.

Nice! I've got last generation fanned 7130/8Gb/256 and I like it a lot. Had to do two fresh installs, but now it works really really well. My only complaints are the fan which can get annoying, weight, thickness and creaking back. I'd love to get fanless 7140, but I've got a really good deal on my 7130 and I'm just not ready to drop the kind of dough that 7140 commands. I hope to take the jump next year when 7140 will be clearanced out.
