Is there anything missing in terms of benchmark data and/or other.. Or is it already out there? It gets fairly hot.. To my surprise, it threw out a BSOD.. which now features a frowny-face.. How very Windows 8 of them. Child-ize everything.. including BSOD.
I also purchased the docking station.. which includes a displayport.. and does output to 4K (Samsung UDsomething).
Not a bad purchase.. If you think about it in terms of.. Bacon.. ~800$ item is 145.45 lbs of bacon today.. 4yrs ago it was 228.57; I think that is how I will quantify/justify all my future impulse tech purchases.. the cost in lbs of bacon. /tangent
Anyways.. If there is something that is unknown regarding this CPU/platform.. maybe I can find out.. I will open it up, I don't care.. I won't microwave it or blend or frisbee (well, frisbee maybe.. I don't like win8). It oddly does not seem faster than Z7340D in my Venue 8 pro..
I got my 7140 128GB on Tuesday. I also still have a 5130 since last year. Quick perspective on the 7140:
1. Only .1" thicker than the 5130 and fanless design.
2. I have tested games like COD 4, MTX vs ATV, Saints Row 3, Crysis 2 and Earth Defense Force. Of those only COD 4 would play at low settings on the 5130. The others were slide shows on the 5130 and unplayable.
3. 3D gaming can get real warm in the right top corner area of the back, but not hot like the the other V11 pro models or Surface Pro. Also not hot like the Yoga 2 and 3 Haswells. The games played great at medium settings and at 1280X720. EDF is a resource hog, so was surprised it played smooth. The 7140 performs FAR better for gaming than the 5130. Different level entirely.
4. Battery life is still to be determined, but appears on par with the 5130 but about an hour less gaming. I use the battery dock and get about 5.5 hours of battery life for 3D gaming and twelve not gaming so far (the gaming part could go up or down and hour depending on what games- duh).
5. Dolphin is an emulator that plays Gamecube games. The 5130 played at half the speed of the 7140. Most games that work on Dolphin are very playable now with the 7140. Impressive.
6. Wifi seems as robust and stable as the 5130 that is good.
7. Speaker output is adequate for a "laptop" and not quiet and tinny.
8. Display is very good and ditto for touch response (though I mainly use a bluetooth mouse and the keyboard dock).
I got the 5130 and intended it to be a backup PC and a mini me laptop for portable entertainment and gaming with maximum battery and portability. The 5130 did pretty good, but the 7140 fits as perfect as can expect with this type of device. The trade off of course would be more performance and less battery life if even better. The 7140 IMO has a near perfect balance. It will surprise folks how well this fanless device can play games. Again, this is from the perspective of a tablet size fanless device.
The 7140 is truly impressive IMO, with one issue to solve:
The one issue I have is sleep mode drain. It loses about 15% over eight hours. The 5130 about a third of that over the same time. Not acceptable and have to figure out what is causing it.
Added: Older games like Unreal 3 play smooth at 1080p and so did EDF, but that just drains the battery more quickly and adds to the heat. 720p for me is perfect for a device with a display this size. Can not stress how much better in performance the 7140 is over the 5130 with same fanless design.
Need to sell my 5130 now.... I frankly did not expect to be as impressed as I have been and fully expected to return the 7140 after comparing to the 5130 for a week or so. Wrong. Worth the $250 extra over the 5130 for the performance, twice the ram and twice the storage- if deciding on the two devices.
