It was the only body on frame SUV that I thought was still being made when I bought it and it had a third row seat which I wanted.
Toyota Land Cruiser/Lexus LX570
Toyota Sequoia
Toyota 4Runner/Lexus GX460
Ford Expedition
Nissan Armada/Infinity QX56
Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon/Cadillac Escalade
Chevy Suburban/GMC YukonXL/Cadillac Escalade ESV

Off the top of my head as far as body-on-frame SUVs currently made that seat at least 7. I left off the Pathfinder since the 2013 model is moving to unibody construction.

should have clarified, only one that was in my budget at the time. the 4 runner was another option but more expensive

I'm thinking that a A 2004 Kia Picanto would also be a good choice camper. It seats a lot of people, can carry a lot of stuff and it's a very comfortable ride. And if you'll ever need other parts, it won't be a biggie as we all know that Kia sells a lot cheaper than the rest of the top tier auto companies. Don't believe me? you can check it out here http://www.car-stuff.com/kiaparts.htm

Uh, wrong continent mate.

And somehow I doubt it can tow 7500lbs.

oh. forgot to backread. And yeah I agree, I don't think it could take 7500lbs. :<

http://www.edmunds.com/kia/borrego/2009/

Towing capacities for a properly equipped Kia Borrego are 5,000 pounds for the V6 model and a class-leading 7,500 pounds for the V8.

http://news.consumerreports.org/cars/2008/01/kia-borrego.html

Kia says that the V6 Borrego can tow 5,000 pounds and that the V8 model tows 7,500 pounds.

I think Nutbucket's comment on doubting the 7500lb was directed at RaymartChase's post about the Kia Picanto.

Anyway - it is true the Borrego V8 is rated for 7500lbs. I can't vouch for it yet as I still have not towed with it. We are still looking for our perfect camper - came home from the Hershey, PA RV show with nothing hitched.

Still loving the Borrego though, it is a joy to drive. I have to find some 17" snow tires for it - I lucked into a set of factory chrome 17" wheels for $235, so the 18s will come off for the winter and the 17s will go on.

Apparently they're discontinued. The local Kia dealership only started selling them for the 2011 model year though. I've driven many a Sorento and they're not bad. Nice ride, plenty of power. The appeal of these things is lost on me though. I can only ever picture SUVs like this as being vehicles for soccer moms.

Hey Erik,
Would you mind giving me an update on your Borrego? I'm thinking of getting one and would love to hear how things are going for you. Have you had or have you heard of any issues when it comes to getting parts or having it worked on by Kia?
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric.

Sorry this reply is a little late in coming, I just noticed this post. We traded the Borrego in for a 2016 F150 last June. While it was still running just fine (I honestly believe that V8 and transmission have at least another 100 000 miles in them), it was faulty peripheral systems and lack of available parts the aided in the decision. Shortly before our summer trip to Maine, the AC quit working. Turned out the condenser had a breach and lost all refrigerant (my mechanic was quite sure this was due to impact from a rock or other road debris and not corrosion or a defect). What followed was a the painful reality of owning a rare version of a rare short run vehicle. Took a long time to track down a replacement condenser for the limited V8 model (V6 ones were plentiful). The kicker is that a small connecting tube broke during disassembly and NO ONE in the continental US had one. I finally found a used one in a scrap yard 80 miles away and drove out myself to get it.

After all was back together (two weeks after entering the shop) my wife and I decided that we did not want to take the chance of our camper tow vehicle breaking down far from home with no parts readily available (hence the new F150).

Other than the AC nightmare (no fault of KIA really) we loved the vehicle. It ran and towed my 5800lb camper just great and gave us 89000 miles. If you do get one, PM me - I have lots of spare parts left including rear shocks, floor mats, air and oil filters, and 4 Bridgestone Blizzak winter tires mounted on chrome OEM Borrego 17” wheels. I can give you a great package deal price!

Really appreciate your reply! I'm still a few months from making a decision but have started to lean away from the Borrego. Now that most used ones have over 100K on them it concerns me about getting parts even if I get the V6. For not too much more I'm also looking at used Lexus GX 470 or the 4runner. Currently a V6 would handle my towing needs but the V8 is certainly nice A few weeks ago I looked at a Borrego and interior quality just doesn't compare to used toyota or lexus. Glad to hear you got a reliable vehicle. Again thanks for the info. Have a great time camping this season!

My son had one for a couple of years. Not sure quite why he got rid of it. That was when gas was 3 or 4 dollars a gallon, so I am sure mileage played a part. He did not need the towing capacity, but wanted 4wd because he works for the highway department and has to get to work in any kind of snowstorm (we live in MN.)

Ah, yep. Forgot to post that. I got it for $19k (it has 23k miles). Not bad considering MSRP on it when new was $38k. The limited model has heated first AND second row leather seats and is fully loaded with options.

for this much, wouldn't it be better to get a used Lexus LX/GX 460? Those things are bulletproof.
