so far I'm rather liking this device, the screen is lovely & setup was quite smooth. After using an ipad holding a 7 inch device does feel a big odd though.

Happy 30000th post!

But yeah, why the Fire HD over the Nexus 7? Big Amazon book reader?

Easy choice, I won this Kindle LOL, I just gifted my son with it, he's thrilled but already has asked me to root to get him the Google play store

Smart guy.

The best thing about 7" tablets are how comfortable they feel in your hands for nearly everything versus a 10". The paperback book size really is perfect for portability. It even feels like a book when you put a nice leather case on it (that is until you open it, of course).

My first tablet was the iPad 1, but I quickly got used to the 7" form factor with the Kindle Fire and then Nexus 7.

I do like my wife's Fire for what it is. Granted I don't really do anything other than read books, watch a video here and there, and pull up a recipe for the kitchen, but still. The size is far more usable to me than the 10" design I think.

How's the build quality on this thing? Any widespread problems being reported? I'm about done with Asus.

TF101 had horrible backlight bleed and dead pixels galore, TF201 had gps and wifi issues, and the same screen issues as the TF101 from what I read, and the Nexus 7 has the screen lift.

The screen quality is really nice on this thing. As far as the physical properties of the device the only thing I don't like is that the power & volume rockers are kind of hard to see with my old eyes as they are black & kind of blend in with the rest of the body of the device. Sound quality is actually really good, surprisingly so.

Kindle Fire HD is rock solid build quality. We have one that just was used all day by about 15 kids from the ages of 2 to 12 at a birthday party. Covered in sticky fingerprints, dropped a couple of times, still works perfectly.

I'm pretty sure our Nexus 7 would be in pieces if we had put it through this.

Yeah its like they went to the other extreme with the power button. The first one was too easy to hit.

If I was keeping this device for my own use I think I'd be marking the buttons in some way to make them easier to see. It is a small thing but becomes really annoying if you are using the device while in bed or in other settings with dim light.

Overall though I am very impressed with the quality of this device, the screen & sound quality alone are outstanding particularly when you consider that it only costs $199.

Many people who actually paid that 199 arent happy with it because of the adware all over the thing. If I could root and install whatever I wanted to avoid the ads, I'd be happy with one.

That's exactly what the Fire and Nexus 7 did, was finally bring the prices of 7" tablets down in price. For all their shortcomings, they're pretty good for ~$200.

Now if someone would do the same thing for the smartphone market. The profit margin on smartphones borders on obscene(from all of the manufacturers)

you can root it and avoid the ads. Or pay $15 to do so.

On the other hand, we've received about $15 worth of credits, gift cards, from the ads.

Not all ads are bad. Ads in newspapers are quite useful while ads on tv are usually annoying.

On a tablet they're somewhere in between.

The only ads I've seen so far are on the lock screen. I see that for about 2 seconds and it's gone. I saw one reviewer mentioned that there is a tiny text ad at the bottom of the home screen, but none have showed up on mine so far (had it just 2 days).

I'm not bothered by the ads on the Fire HD, they are very minimal and not even seen most of the time.

And I'm a person that runs the MVPS HOST file on Windows and ad and script blocker software in my browsers. I hate ads.
