Just got a Phenom II 1100T - OC'ing Advice?

So, lucky me - a relative of mine just sold me a Phenom II 1100T for cheap, so now I've got this beastly chip in my 2nd desktop.

I want to overclock the living snot out of this thing, but figure I should ask for some advice: what kinds of OCs are typical and what kind of cooling is needed to achieve said typical OCs? Will be pairing it with an old GTX 460 to make it a pretty potent spare gaming machine.

Thanks!

Since you don't really need an X6-1100T I'll trade you my X3-720. Better fit for the GTX460 and you'll have more fun trying to unlock the extra core and then overclock it.

I'm so nice

Though looking at your sig, I see you need to replace that old 2600K too...I'd gladly recycle it for you :awe:

I keep my 1090t just shy of 4ghz. The voltage needed to get it stable rapidly goes up if I set it to 4ghz or above(need to set it at >1.5v). I believe that's slightly below average, but I could remember wrong. For cooling I use a a70 and the temps are just above 50C with prime95. I pair mine with a 560 and it's fine for gaming.

Have fun tweaking your OC

Keep it below 52C

Most people are ok with voltage up to 1.55v on air, assuming you can cool it. Others of faint heart like to stay at or below 1.5v.

After you get your core stablilized it's very important to work on your cpuNB, most Thuban's will do 3GHz +/- a few 100.

The question is what MOBO do you have, can it handle the awesome power of an X6?
Does it have a good power delivery system and beefy heatsinks? To get the most out of it you might want active cooling on your MOBO and NB.

Keep everything at or under stock while you boost the CPU NB speed. You want around 2.6GHz. Keep HT speed at 1GHz. After that take what you can get on the core itself. 3.8GHz was pretty common, but 4GHz isn't rare. These chips like cold, get the best cooler you can. Definitely keep it under 1.5v (I never wanted to go over 1.45 myself), unless you have water cooling (keep it under 50c load, yes 50c).

1.55v on air?! Brave man.
Though maybe it's different for the newer PhenomII. Like 3GHz CPU NB?!

First thing to do is find out where it's stable at a voltage you are comfortable with. If you have a good chip you can probably do 3.8GHz at 1.4 or 1.45V but if you really want to hit 4GHz you can try 1.5. I haven't heard of many people running 1.55 out side of benching. Depends on cooling of course.

Once you find a comfortable and stable max clock then start adjusting the CPUNB. Try for at least 2400, that nets you the majority of the unrealized performance. 2600 is stable for a lot of people with 2800 being a bit rarer and once you get to that level the motherboard is a big factor.

Some people are just born with big stones

All four of my Phenom II's did at least 2.8GHz on the cpuNB, my 1090T did 3.2GHz

Depends wholly on silicon though, as with anything we do!

Most should get 4GHz or pretty close, depending on your cooling. As others have said, don't just adjust the core multiplier and call it a day. As those cores increase clockspeed they need to be fed. I'd overclock the cores and the NB/L3 separately to see where you can get them, and then adjust your dividers to get as close to those clocks as you can.

I have my 1090t at 3.6 on stock volts and it runs about 43c under full load.

About 3.5 - 3.8 easily, 3.9 - 4.2 with some effort. You want to add additional cooling to the power delivery around the CPU area, the lower the temps, the better. Keep the CPU under 50C for best results.
