Just got a PS3, cool stuff to do with it?

So I just got my PS3, played around with some demos, played a BLU-RAY Movie.

So far I'm pretty impressed with the unit, but was wondering what are some cool things I can do with the ps3 other than the standard, play games / movies.

I'm talking about running linux, ripping blu-ray, etc.

Anyway to play back divx or non standard content using linux?

Also, any MUST play games to play on the unit? I'm looking to check out Ninja Gaiden Sigma as my first real game. Any good demos to check out?

It's a powerful unit, and I want to know what people are doing with they're system other than playing movies / games. Also any popular sites for this type of stuff would be helpful! =D

Thanks guys!

It can do anything a regular ppc linux box can do.

you can also stream video and audio with wmp, and transcode other types of files using tversity or any other kind of transcoding media server software. check out the heavenly sword demo for some fun.

Anyone also know if it's safe to go to firmware 1.9? I remember on my PSP updating the firmware was a no no if I wanted to run homebrew stuff.

You could set up a DLNA server to stream vids, pics, and music to the ps3.

I'm not interested in homebrew... but you will be missing out on a lot of new features if you don't upgrade.

homebrew is non existant atm since all the games are on blu-ray. everything else can be done on linux. its safe to update for the time being unless you really want to hold out just in case, but the new firmwares bring tons of great features.

You could use its browser to counter-troll wiitards and 360 fanboys

You can load up a photo slideshow into a Picture folder on a flash card or stick and play it.

What I've played of the Armored Core 4 demo was fun, but I have too many other unplayed games to buy it yet.

FYI, Netflix carries all the US releases of blu-ray movies and TV shows, so you can rent instead of buy. The Host looked amazing in 1080p, as did Curse of the Golden Flower, Black Hawk Down, The Prestige and The Fountain.

If I really wanted to break my TV or hit my friends in the face I'd use a baseball bat.

Actually, I did own a Wii before getting a PS3. Ended up selling it though after beating Zelda.

Doesn't matter. I think it's a waste of time.

I'll post my opinion, you post yours. But don't bring stupid shit like post counts into the equation, it doesn't help your case.

If you have a PSP, you can do remote play from anywhere.

What exactly does this mean?

Your PS3 will act as a media server for the PSP. You leave your PS3 in "Remote Play" mode, and then anywhere you have an internet connect, you can sign into your PSN account with the PSP and control your PS3. The highlight of this is media viewing, but some games are playable via this mode, and you can also initiate store downloads.

That is really cool thanks for clarifying for me.

All I specified is that it can be done. Not whether it's a good use or not.
