Any interesting applications? Preferably free. Also, anybody have any recommendations as far as cases/screen protectors go to prevent it from getting beat up?

The 'remote' application from Apple is a must. (free)

I haven't used a screen protector for over a year now and have had no problems.

I find with my phone it gets scratched up way too easily without one (I have the LG Shine).

1st - protect the screen I have used both crystal and the "matte" finish i guess you could call it. The crystal lets the colors shine through as if there was no cover, but there are a ton of fingerprints. With the matte finish, the colors are a little less vibrant, but there are no smudges.

2nd - case is also a must, there are many different kinds. Look around, you will find one you like. I liked the rubber ones because the phone didn't slide off of surfaces as easily.

3rd - (optional) but SWEET - jailbreak that sucka! Gives you access to free apps like SSH, email files from the iphone (file browser), safari file download, customize the appearance and sounds (make your own if you are crafty) just to name a few. There are so many options. Google WINPWN. If you need any help or have any questions about it, pm me and I'll help you out.

The glass screen on the Touch is far more durable than most other handheld devices.

No need for screen protection, the glass is scratch resistant (its made for touchscreen abuses). As long as you put it in your pocket without any other items, such as keys or coins, it will be fine.

You probably don't need a case either, unless you wanna make it look really fat. It's like buying a Ferrari and putting a huge ass bumper bra on it.

Aurora Feint - not sure if it's iPhone online. Trace is a fun game also - most of my apps are paid for or use internet though. I love my iPhone.

Definitely jailbreak. SSH from the iPhone is pretty awesome (if not entirely useful...), but you also get access to apps that aren't available from Apple's app store while retaining all the normal functionality.

I like the screen protector that I have - it keeps smudges off. So no fingerprints. http://www.powersupportusa.com...iphone3G_antiglare.php

For Apps:
Pandora - internet radio (free)
Apple's Texas Hold'em - great graphics, weird but decent AI, impressive game to show to people (not free)
Freerunners - tower defense game (not free)
Labyrinth LE - free labyrinth game (free)
Translator - translates languages. comes in handy sometimes (free)
Tap-tap revenge - like rock-star or dance-dance revolution (free)
Google Mobile App - Google search with speech recognition (free)
Remote - as mentioned above (free)
The Weather Channel - nice weather application (free)
Bloomberg - nice stock, commodity, currency and business app (free)

not trying to hijack the thread here but:

1) can jailbreaking brick the Touch?
2) can you play NES games on the Touch?

Jailbreaking does not brick, so jailbreak away. And I'm sure there's a way to play NES games, you just have to know where to look.

As far as the screen protector, don't get one, it's made to not have one. My screen is only scratched because I throw it in a bag full of sand when I go to the beach.

Thanks for the suggestions, looks like I have quite a few apps to look through. Another question - what does everybody recommend for transferring music to the iPod? I tried to use iTunes, but I really can't stand it.

I disagree, my Touch was in my pocket with keys and loose change often and the screen still looks brand new. The back of my Touch has scratches and nicks and looks pretty banged up, but the screen is flawless. Amazing! lol in contrast on my Blackbery Perl, the screen looked like shit after 5 days. I threw it in my pocket with keys a few times and BOOM a big scratch was already there

Every company should use the same glass Apple uses on the iPhone.

I like the texture or "traction" the screen cover gives me, as well as the anti-fingerprint properties.

The added protection to the glass is just a bonus for me.

Get a real screen protector - Invisible Shield or its competitor. I have Invisible shield for both my iPod Touch and my N82. Flawless. The competitor is probably better becasue you get 2 sheets. It's a warranty too and they guarantee no scratches. This is not the lame stick-on protector. Trust me, i've used stick on protectors for my 4G iPod, Moto V600, SE K750, SE W810i, SE K700, Nokia N82 and they all BLOW. They scratch over time and they come off. Replacement is a must. Get Invisible Shield, or I think the competitor might be a little better (oh yeah I forgo the competitor's name... but it starts with a "b" some thing like bodyguardz or something).

Case - Incase slider case. Definitely. The 2G one is a lot better. Makes your iPod black sleek and sexy with that case. I have one for my 1G touch, I know a few people with it for the iPhone, it's just sexy. If you think this makes the iPod fat, it doesn't. The 1G maybe just slightly, but it's no iPhone. no one will think you have an iphone because its still much fatter. The 2G doesn't look fat at all even with a case. Trust me, I dont' want a brick in my pocket, but if it means protecting my iPod just a little, I'll get this. Your iPod will remain compact.

Apps - Remote, Aurora Feint, Tap Tap, UrbanSpoon, What's-that-program-called-that-identifies-songs? (more useful for iPhone because it has a mic), and the LIGHTSABER PROGRAM.
