Just 3 more payments to "Juans EZ Amigo Credit" and she's all mine

Got it yesterday, 18inch Sony LCD the N-80.

All the comparisons are against my old PS790 19' Viewsonic

First off the look, it sits a little lower than my tube monitor but it is light.

Course the space factor is the main reason to get one of these beauties and it does fit the bill here.

The down side for me from that repect was all the crap I had on my old monitor like my phone, mic, router, and dsl box which all on top, had to be put behind the new flatscreen but it does look better.

And the picture size doesn't seem to be smaller than my 19' in fact it looks a little bigger.

I chose Sony because I went to comp usa and just did a little eye comparison and Sony was the only one I thought was actually clear enough to be mistaken for tube. Other models I looked over were Samsung and Viewsonic.

Before you buy one of these things go to a store and compare it against the best Tube monitor of around the same size. And remember unless you get top top top, the res is usually 1024x1080 or somthing like that. Mine is 1600X1200 but I paid for it.

The picture is great. Looks good in games as well as the desktop. Played Tribes 2 on it for about 30 min and it never missed a beat even with the res cranked.

But all in all, unless you have a real size issue, its not better than a high end tube.

Is it worth the money? For the space I guess since I was really in need but for the picture no. Don't get me wrong, its a great picture but its not any better than a tube, just different. Does take some eye adjustment.

Just my 2 Cents.

have you noticed any problem with refresh rates not being high enough when you're playing a first person shooter like Tribes2?

LCD's do not refresh like CRTs they just redraw over the old pixel i believe crts go like old pixel->black->newpixel and LCD goes old pixel->new pixel try waving your had in front of a crt vs the lcd and you can notice a big difference. your hand will not flash in front of the LCD but the crt it will no matter how high the refresh rate is.

so 60 hz refresh rate is fine for LCD's

there is an issue with LCD's that causes problems with games called ghosting but all high end LCD's have fixed this

I hope mine is ok in that respect. I think it is though this is Sony's brand new line.

Do LCDs even have pixels?

Of course they do. What do you think the 1600x1200 measures?

Texmaster: FYI, a 19" monitor is usually ~18" Visible. An LCD is all visisble, so the visible screen size is likely very close.

<< do LCD displays strain your eyes less than CRTs? >>

Much less, because the pixels aren't constantly blinking like a CRT. An example:

Say you have a CRT set at a 75 Hz refresh rate. That means it is blinking every pixel on and off 75 times a second. You may not be able to see it by staring, but your eyes are affected. On the other hand, with an LCD, the pixel only blinks when it has to change to a different color.
