just got back from interview

I had an interview in the fall for a construction internship. The way it worked however was the first day was everyone walking around and talking to company reps and the 2nd day was the actual interviews if you got asked back. I researched the company pretty thoroughly and threw out some questions which seemed to impress the rep. Went back the next day for the interview, interview ran over the alloted time but no biggie. Got the internship and on may 15th i drive out to kansas to work construction for the next 3 months. yeahhhhhh

I'd give your's about a 5/10. Did you notice if any of the other interviews ran long? If they did then that reduces it down to 3/10.

Steve Yegge did a good post on interviewing. Basically, his point was most interviewers aren't all that good at it either and have already made up some hurdles the candidate must pass that have nothing to do with the actual job or anything in particular (except scratching the interviewers itch). So interviews are basically chance that everything clicks. Even if you do an awesome job it isn't surprising if you don't get the position as people are idiots. Steve is an interviewer too so it's not like he is making fun of people. I think his advice is definitely worth it (especially when you see mentions like "corporate culture" and that kind of stuff).

But honestly, it's for some school thing? Who cares . Good practice no matter what.

edit: Okay, to be clear -- I am picking on the "corporate culture" thing only because it's a nebulous term.

Exactly. The guy interviewed for a very basic, entry-level position which SHOULDN'T BE more than 15 minutes because there are 70 applicants to interview!

Pure numbers-wise, 20/70 is a pretty good chance but the impression that I get from your situation is that unless you made a VERY good impression in those 15 minutes, they won't remember you simply because there are 70 applicants.

A good interview for me lasts 1 hour or so...

anything less and I screwed up somewhere.

My second to last job interview (for an internship) was fantastic. I was there for about 2hrs, and got it.
Basically, it all clicked during the interview as the job was supposed to be dull and I brought of enthusiasm
of someone who is always interested in learning.

Best damn internship ever. Friggen' knocked their socks off

My last interview lasted from 9:50AM to about 4PM... I talked with the three company owners, two of the project managers (engineering and design firm), and the latest new guy plus the guy I knew from school.

Then we went to this art gallery place where some of their work was on display and poked around for a bit then out for pizza which took over an hour to get delivered so we all (pretty much everyone from the company was there) chatted for a bit.

They offered me a position and I took it, starting a couple weeks after the interview. Apparently I said "yes" before they told me their offer... whatever, I like the place.

I also remember when I interviewed with SAIC....wow that was long. I didn't get it, but the interviews involved some of the coolest discussions I'd had up until that point.

not always true. if you ever interview for any jobs on wall street / hedge funds / etc, its not uncommon to sit in a root for 4 or 5 hours without moving, and doing 8 or 10 interviews 1 after another. You interview from everyone from other entry level people, to the managing director of the group.
