I went to the ER because I don't trust guys in my club to use glue that close to my eye, and one of the guys in my club is a nurse and said if they didn't glue it shut it would scar.

Honestly, it didn't hurt, it's not a bad injury, it's just funny that I got it because I wasn't paying attention and got thrown and split my cheek. The ER doc also said that it was deep enough that if I didn't get it glued it would of turned into a scar. I don't want scars on my face unless I got them with a cool memorable story. Getting face planted because you didn't realize you were getting thrown is not one of them.

I'm from the old school "rub some dirt in it" camp myself Dr.P Your son sounds like a stoic, I like him already.

I suspected it was the ER thing that inspired the fail, but wanted to be certain. Because getting thrown on your head is a much more understandable reason for taking damage than a jab. Provided it wasn't a Foreman telephone pole jab of course

That qualifies as a "cool scar". Hell son! You got thrown on your face during Judo, that is all you tell 'em.

BTW, how the hell did you lose focus while playing Judo?!? Or did your opponent pearl harbor you? If he did, I'd have a serious disagreement with that cat the next time I saw him. And I'd talk to the Sensei too. Otherwise, all I can say is, wake up! God damn! I can't even imagine not being dialed in during a training session.

Hehehe, I can tell you from personnal experiences that some Judo woman can be pretty scary. I'm talking nationnal caliber Judoka practitionneer. Even standard big fucking muscular brown beltish woman (or was it... ???) can be intimidating to me.

I still have nightmare of some insane throws I had the misfortune to be associated with.

For references, I'm a strongly built 205lbs.

Dont they teach you break falls in Judo?

hahaha, when you get trown in Judo, you always make your damn best to fall anywhere else then on your back. Rolling is absolutly out of the quest unless your practicing and not sparing.

Typically, if you get trown badly, you will have opportunity to reverse your body in the air and fall on your front, effectivelly breaking the trow.

Now, what I assume from his situation is that it was a supprise trow that he didn't see coming. His body reacted spontanously, trying to revert the trow but it was too late. Sometimes, if the trower is not controlling the fall good enough, his opponent might fall badly on his head.

... You do have to sign papers when you enlist in Judo. There is much more injuries then in other martial arts.

Were I practice, there is two clubs. The familly club and the competition club. If you enlist with the competition guys, you have to sign papers in order to protect the Club from any legal action you would take against them following serious injuries. Furthermore, you have to pay for special insurance every year with the Canadian Judo Academy. At least, its this way for official Clubs in Canada.

Now, let me tell you, its a big club, with around 50/75 peeps coming each nights for the competition parts. They come fully prepare to give their 100%. These guys and gals means business. We have a fridge packed with ice packs and 1st care arsenal. It is not unusual for injuries to appens. Usually with articulations. My Judogi usually has trace of blood at the end of the night. Not from punch, more from the mat to skin friction. IT IS a dangerous sport. Probably more so then many, at least of the martial types. And I speak from experience. I've practiced Karate (Kempo, Shotokan, Yosekan) and some forms of Chinese Kung-fu (Long-fist, White-Krane).

There is probably more dangerous sports out there. But Judo (at the competition level) has to be amongst them. Still damn fun tho. You just have to be extremelly carefull and very lucky.

I have 3 broken toes, a questionnable knee (buckles easilly) and something to the groin (don't know exactly what yet). My pharmacy is downright packed (all legal stuff). Its very usefull sometimes when I can't sleep after some nice sparing.

A very very enjoyable sport. You just have to pray you'll be able to enjoy it for your entire life.

maregg,

I get what you are saying

It is just that any Martial Art (includes mixed, boxing, wrestling, etc.) that has full contact training, produces it fair share of injuries, despite the protective equipment.

Edit: Most dojos don't allow the contact for insurance reasons, but I assure you not all dojos are like that

Well, we hadn't started Randori yet, and one of the other brown belts (I'm an ikkyu) wanted to show another guy some throw he saw on youtube last night. So he grabs me and does about 10 or 12 fit in explaining it. The other guy says "Let me try" and grabs on to me. I'm chatting with the brown belt thinking he is just going to do a few fit-ins when bam, he does the throw (think drop kata-garuma with an arm wrapped up) and by the time I realize I'm going down I'm a good 2 inches from the mat. I tried to tuck my head and roll with it but it was way to late, so I just ate a face full of mat.

In terms of falling, believe me I can fall. I am the preferred throwing dummy for my coach. I'm also the guy my bjj coach goes to to teach throws to the rest of the guys (I hope I can get my black belt in judo this year). I just honestly had no idea he was going to throw me and he did it so fast I had no time to react. The guy is better then me in randori anyway so I don't see myself getting even anytime soon LOL. We all had a good laugh about it once the bleeding stopped and we realized I wasn't hurt. Before we cleaned it up the coach was sure I needed stitches.

But hey, shit happens. I broke a guys ankle so bad last year he had to get two pins put in. It comes with the territory, sometimes accidents happen. He still trains and is one of my best friends.

Anyway, the purpose of the post was just so you guys could laugh at me.

Yea, I see more injuries in the MMA classes. But in judo to date I have broken 7 fingers, every toe at least 2 times, fractured my foot (not the ankle, but the bones on the top of the foot), tore my rotator cuff, sprained my elbow (flying armbar in competition), and got kicked in the nuts so bad the doctor thought I had testicular torsion. (I always wear a cup now)

In general, I find bjj safer to practice then judo, but MMA a lot more dangerous. I'd put wrestling and judo on the same level. Any full contact sport is going to have tons of injuries.

Oh and my name is not related to martial arts. It's related to being really sneaky when solving issues in relation to software development.

Pfffft. I thought you got a broken nose or something. I once got a bad nose bleed (from a well placed jab) during a sparring match and the only reason I stopped was because the instructor didn't want me bleeding all over the mat. Took 15 minutes to stop. The only difference is that your's might have left a visible scar, which could be cured with neosporin and some strips.

In one line: Fail.
You had a bad nose bleed from a jab, and you call getting face planted by a throw or take down fail? Or is it just that he went to the Dr. over it?

That he went to the doctor over it. No shame in being faceplanted or thrown, but seriously, the ER for something like that?

So as you get older, you are likely to have traumatic arthritis, and your fingers and toes will be fugly and misshapen, but you were worried about a small scar under your eye? You are a trip kid.
