this thread shows a clear generational shift in attitude

born pre ~85-86: no cell phones
born post 85 or so: The world owes me. I do what the fvck I want.

I dont know if thats an accurate generalization. btw, I was born way pre 85-86

so when will you choose to grow up and act like a respectable adult?

Who are you kidding, you haven't reached that point either.

that's beside the subject. I may be childish for my age in some instances, and depressingly mature in others

Let me get this straight... Because I dont agree that everyone born post 85 thinks the world owes them and they do whatever they want, I need to grow up?

Interesting.

based on the posts in this thread.... You sure seem to display an attitude that your day-to-day goings on are far more important than everyone around you, and their ability to relax and enjoy something for a meager 2 hours. Whether or not you realize this attitude, again, is irrelevent to the reality of how you display yourself.

Like others have said, not all theaters do this. If I remember correctly, the AMC Loews near me has this message saying, "don't ruin the movie by adding your own soundtrack" or something like that. I don't recall anything about turning off your phones.

I've just realized something. Anyone ever notice how there are those people in the world absolutely oblivious to their surroundings? The people who drive in the left lane, unaware that there are 30 cars behind them waiting to pass. The person in the grocery store, blocking the aisle with their cart while they can't make up their mind over a brand. The idiot driving on the road talking on his cell phone... wait a second...

I just did a google search for "oblivious of their surroundings" and over 1/6th of the hits had something to do with cell phones! Maybe many of the cell phone junkies really are that oblivious to their surroundings that they wouldn't notice a blinking light in the corner of their eye. Have cell phones somehow genetically altered humans to lose what once was a simple survival skill, fine tuned over millenia to help us at one time to avoid predators that would love to stick their fangs in us? Granted, there are no sabre toothed tigers any more, but humans once had the ability to detect subtle movements of a camouflaged predator. Now some of you humans can't even detect a cell phone blinking on and off?! In not even a couple thousand years time, some of us no longer even notice blinking lights flashing in the corners of our eyes. How the heck do you navigate the streets and survive?

I notice it, I'm just not going to bitch like a PMS-laden woman about seeing a cell phone light come on once or twice. Personally, my hearing blows (ear infections as a kid left my ear drums scarred) and stuff like eating popcorn or moving around constantly is a lot more annoying than seeing a light.

In other words, it seems I'm more tolerant of stuff than you are.

This thread has done me a great disservice. I'm sure the next time I go to a movie I'll notice how many people are texting and think about whether they should or shouldn't be whereas before I would probably just ignore and filter it out of my mind. damn it.

So you get distracted by someone texting in a movie?

Stop worrying about what other people are doing, and watch the movie. Shouldn't be a problem.

But most people would rather get on their high horse and bleat on about immaturity and lack of responsibility...and let something insignificant affect them. I'm sure all the anti-cell phone zealots don't buy food or drink at the movies either. Because popcorn and drinks, which can actually make noise, really disturb my viewing experience.

oh, and it always says silence your phone...not turn it off.

If you ACTUALLY bothered to READ ANY of my posts in this thread, you would have known that I don't even take my phone into the movies with me. My points arent speaking to whether or its right or okay to text during a movie or not text during a movie. My points all pertain to the way others perceive the action and respond to the asanine responses some of the members posted.

Me disagreeing with the generalization about people being born before and after 85, has NOTHING to do with whether or not one should use a phone during a movie.

the point most of the pro-texting group seems to miss is there will be DOZENS of people

so that the light is not visible?? not likely. Why should patrons be asked to adapt to the
"new" electronic toys when it's to everyone's benefit to just shut the damm thing off!

How do you know it is to "everyone's" benefit to shut it off? Have you polled moviegoers everywhere and asked them if they like/dislike a small light eminating from the row in front of them?

It's called ATOT, and yes we hate it and you.

As for the "well there are so many other distractions, screaming children, blah blah blah" crowd, you guys must go to bad theaters.

I have been yes, because usually it is accompanied by the texter + friends discussing something about the text.

I leave my phone on silent so I can see the # of the person who called me, AFTER the movie. Not so I can check who called me during the movie.

So put it on silent, not vibrate, which btw makes noise, and return the text after the movie.

Have you considered that him and others might have writen this just to agravate the people that disagree with them?

Obviously NOT. You swalowed it all, hook, line and sinker.

I've texted during a movie maybe 2 times...you're the person that is going to let something insignificant affect you. Stop worrying about stuffing your fat face with food and watch the movie!!

vibrate makes noise? and people walking around also make noise...moot point.

p.s. - there is a difference between worrying about what others do, and worrying about something that directly concerns you (a text message).

I have been yes, because usually it is accompanied by the texter + friends discussing something about the text.

anecdotal evidence like this just indicates that you're deadset on viewing texting as a problem. FWIW, i've never seen this happen, or at least i didn't notice it and/or get my panties in a wad.

i'm not going to change anyone's opinion about this, since most of you want to bash texting like it slept with your little sister. go ahead and let other people ruin your experience by texting. go ahead and get angry about it. refuse to ignore it. on the other hand, i won't let people who want to look cool by 'flashing' their cell phones (LOL, bitter much?) bother me.

If you have a problem with a few people texting during a movie, you either need to concentrate more on the movie or purchase all the seats so you can have a nice quiet time at the movies.

I said that the back light from cell phones is distracting. Not for long, but when it happens again and again and again, it really starts to detract from the movie-going experience. Are you really so self-centered that you don't realize that what you do is ruining the movie-going experience for the majority of people in the theater who don't feel compelled to text messages the plot of the movie? God forbid, there's an emergency in the office! "t h e _ c o p i e r _ p a p e r _ i s _ i n _ t h e _ l e f t _ d r a w e r" Or, the horror - an emergency at home "t e l l _ t i m m y _ t o _ p u t _ t h e _ t o o t h _ u n d e r _ t h e _ p i l l o w _ f o r _ t h e _ t o o t h f a i r y"

You sound like Barrack Obama. What you said was that people need to improve their comprehension, and then came up with something from your behind about some requirement to close cellphones when none was mentioned. You and everyone else that complains about texting in the movie theater have problems with tolerance. You don't like it and you cry and whine and kick.

Don't try to use logic in a thread like this...

Cell phone hatred is obviously more important than rationality.

Keep seeing variants of this same arguement from the pro-phone crowd about "minding your own business". Anyways, here's the converse of your statement:

If you don't like having people around you, stay home so you don't bother anyone else with your selfish, inconsiderate and thoughtless attitude. Enjoy your phone though...

No one can "mind their own business" if you make it their business by interrupting/distracting them. If you choose to text at home in the dark or yell into your phone at night in bed, then you have a case. Like you said if "you don't like having people around you, stay home".

As to the original, it's EXACTLY cause you "Stop worrying about what other people are doing..." that's the problem. You don't give two sh!ts about disturbing anyone else and how you bother them. You chose to take your phone out, others around you can only choose to gauge their eyes out, beat you, change seats or hold a hand over the area of view with the bright light...
