A silent phone doesnt bother ANYONE, and you probably wont notice it unless you are looking for one
Like someone said already, people eating popcorns is A HELL OF A LOT MORE distracting, why dont they ban popcorns then? And what about people sneezing etc? Give me a break

Having said this, I never check my phone until the "commercial break", but I dont get bothered by anyone either, unless they answer a call, thats just dumb

wowww, yeah im just gonna post on ATOT a bullshit story so everyone can then tell me how bullshit it is. wtf, it is what it is. old guy was standing by the door the whole time (a police officer, not a renta cop, not a security gaurd) he made more of a scene then me, i agree with everyone 100% if someone decides to write a novel, and make loud clicking nosies....with a screen thats a bright as haleys comment...yeah thats no good. but c'mon its 2007, text is great for discreet communication

My phone vibrating and me typing a few words is nothing compared to normal theater distractions. People getting up and coming back. People spilling their m&m's. Slurping their drinks. Crunching their popcorn.

Now please keep in mind I am not writing a book on my BB... just answer a question or two.

However, if you were being louder than the normal distractions and were actually disturbing other movie watchers, that's a different story.

If you can't get away from work long enough to watch a movie with your family, then just don't go, stay at the office, and let them go.

Before the movie starts, you're told to turn off your phone. Not mute it, not set it to vibrate but to turn it off. If you're expecting an emergency phone call then maybe you shouldn't be going to a movie.

It's a text. Even if your phone went off during a movie, no one is going to confiscate your damn phone. If that was the policy, sure then I could see why the OP's phone was confiscated for texting. If people's phones can go off without consequences like these, I feel the OP should be allowed to text.

Maybe there's something wrong with the story here, but I don't see why everyone needs to jump on the OP. Wait an hour? What's wrong with replying for 30 seconds? If you're composing a damn book in the theater and the light is pissing people off, then stop. I could care less if the guy next to me was trying to text and trying to do so indiscreetly. I don't see why anyone would mind. If you're holding the damn phone up and it's annoying the guy behind you, then maybe that would be just reason to stop texting...

ATOT is obviously that crowd that doesn't care about using text messages... Just because you don't use it doesn't mean you jump on the OP.

i love text messages. i do maybe 10-20 a day.

BUT in a crowded movie theatre i don't. why? 1) i don't want to get kicked out, 2) i don't want to ruin anyones enjoyment of the movie.

QFT. It's called common courtesy. I paid just as much as you to see the movie and I expect you to sit there and be as quiet as possible during the entire flick, which includes you turning off your cell phone just like I do before the movie starts.

How the hell does a sending a text message bother anyone. The sound of guy behind me stuffing his face with popcorn is more annoying to me than anything. Some of you people need to just mind your own business and worry about yourself.

If the light from a cell phone seen out of the corner of your eye bothers you that much, stay the fuck home. You obliviously have some serious issues...

The degree to which you misunderstood his post speaks volumes.

Personally, I can't stand it when people use their phone, even on silent for texting. No matter how dim you think your setting is, or how well you're hiding it, it's still noticeable to at least everyone sitting around you. I can filter out usual theatre noises, I can't filter out a bright spot in my vision, or a glow in my peripheral.

If you can't refrain from using the damned device, to the irritation of everyone else, you're a selfish bastard and should be the one staying home.

I was about to suggest this myself. I have witness first hand someone get decked in the jaw for texting in the theatre. For those who say, but but but the light is so dim.. have more dim things to worry about that a text message. Believe it or not, some of us posting here actually grew up in a time where there were no cell phones to bring into a theatre with us. All we had to deal with is the people talking to the screen.

Yet another age of entitlement poster. If you can't make it two hours without texting someone:

1: Grow a penis
2: Stay the fuck out of the theatre

One person texting a msg. in a movie would not be a crisis but the point is there are
HUNDREDS of folks in the show. if even a dozen started texting, now youv'e got a distraction.
Also the rules are clearly posted, if you think they are too prohibitive then choose to
spend your $$ elsewere

People are ACCUSTOMED to people eating popcorn/food, and having drinks at a movie theater. Having a fucking bright light flashed in your face because the asshole in front of you needs to text his myspace page to his kool dude friend is NOT something to get accustomed to. But that's just me.

Great argument! If you have a problem with me, then go the fuck away! You are being selfish.

My wife is normally a very docile creature, but even she asked "Could the b**ch who just talked through this section of the movie on her cell phone please explain to the rest of us what happened because we all missed it!!!?" when some lady let her phone ring four times and then proceeded to answer it and talk for like 2mins during a quiet part of "The Green Mile".

I was very proud of her that Christmas day back in 1999.

The officer coming down asking the OP to leave would have been more distracting than the OP just texting. That is unless there is more to it like the other folks have mentioned.

So what really happened? Why would a cop suddenly appear out of nowhere as kranky said?

dude the guy was like 70 years old with a hunch in his back, cant believe he was still wearing a badge. its yorktown, va small town theater. he was inside just standing behind me to the left, he seen it and must have thought he could truly earn his paycheck by doing the others the service of removing me and my cell phone from the show...

and he did.

A distraction that many can live with, however. Plus, maybe it sent a message to the others watching the scene not to do the same thing. Maybe.
