First of all, GREAT THREAD...it truly is some good readin' lol.

I have no problem with a phone on silent/vibrate, people moving around in their seats make more noise than a vibrating phone. Someone making a quick text is ok too, who cares that a little bright light might be shown for a short time.

But I agree with most people here when they say "BS" on the OP's story. There's just no way a cop of all people shows up the exact moment you start a text. You are leaving out a huge part of what happened or you didn't think through this fabricated story.

I guess a lot of people care about "a little bright light" that's why your told NO before
you go in!. Multiply the "little bright light" X 50 inconsiderate buttheads and the entire
experince is ruined for all..

If a small light for 10 seconds ruins your experice, you're a tool.

Some of you are having a comprehension problem. The OP's phone wasn't confiscated. At the beginning of the movie, everyone was asked to please turn their cell phones off. OP (and probably a couple others in the theater) thought that they were unique! Their cell phones have a vibrate mode. They can use text messaging without talking! Therefore, they're above the rule and can do what they want.

The theater deals with these people the fairest way possible - they give them a CHOICE.
The cell phone stays at the front of the theater, safely locked up, since the user has proven that they can't follow the rules. OR, the person can leave the theater. Actually, there was one other choice: turn it off at the beginning of the movie.

As far as "emergencies", bullshit. 99.999% of what happens to the majority of individuals is NOT an emergency. Your best friend's girlfriend just broke up with him, and he needs someone to comfort him? NOT an emergency. If you can solve an emergency by sending a text message back, it wasn't an emergency.

That's not to say that there aren't individuals who genuinely have emergencies on a regular basis. Heart transplant surgeons, volunteer firemen and EMT's, and a few others regularly have emergencies. It's sort of an unwritten understanding that those few individuals have a valid reason for leaving their phones on vibrate. Is it reasonable to tell other individuals to put their lives on hold because there is a reasonable chance of an emergency? i.e. wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant, Gramma's been in the hospital for a month with a terminal condition, etc. So what if these people bend the rules slightly and leave their phones on vibrate so they can quickly check a message. If there's an emergency, they *leave*. They don't sit there texting.

The vast majority of the rest of us: there is NOT going to be an emergency during the 1 1/2 hours of a movie that can't wait for us to be in the theater lobby to answer. Your life isn't that dramatic, get over yourself.

As far as how distracting one cell phone is,
A. (as pointed out) Just how, then, did theater security pick the OP out from the crowd?
B. If everyone in the theater thought the same way, there'd be a heck of a lot more than just one.

Kudos to the theater management.

Give me a break dartworth. The light emitted from an open cell phone in a DARK theatre IS bright and annoying to look at. Honestly, saying otherwise is just plain foolish.

Listen fella. You're a selfish prick. The majority of people want as silent and distractionless of an experience at the movies as possible. If you can't put down the damn phone, PDA, whatever for 2hours to watch a flick, then just stay the hell home. You're obviously more concerned about what's going on with your phone than you are the movie anyway.

you act like the guy was waving it around the theater...I know EXACTLY how bright a cell phone is.

We can go back and fourth about this all day. The only suggestion to some you is that if for some reason I receive a text or call on my cell (which is always on vibrate) while around me in a theater...please say something to me...PLEASE

I love it, you claim its not distracting. While everyone else on here tells you it is. You say "You're wrong its not distracting" as if you can tell them what their opinion is.

I go to the movies often. Probably an average of once a week. One of the most distracting and most common things now is a person pulling out their cell phone. The screen is bright no matter what the setting in the dark theater.

There is this general rule called being polite. If I have to get up from my seat half way through, I apologize as I go out if I have to make people stand etc. Because I know that it is a distraction but unfortunately, there I don't always have a choice.

When the phone vibrates, think about others. They want to watch the movie in a dark environment with as few distractions as possible. Your attitude of "I can do what I want" is annoying as can be.

I never said it was ok for someone to talk on a cell phone in the theater.

Hopefully whatever theater you go to has hard working employees, such as the security guard, that promptly eject you from the theater. If the two story tall screen that says turn off all cell phones and pagers does not apply to you however, then I sincerely apologize.

Anyways, I just don't view texting as annoying if done without noise. Now I don't say that because I text all the time. In fact the last time I texted was while deer hunting, I was bored and wanted to see if the phone would text. That one time was it. I'd much rather have someone silently texting than having some teeny-bopper talking or causing a scene like they so often do. That's my view on it.

Wow, please do not go to a movie theater again. Maybe you have poor hearing or ability to sense that you're causing a disturbance but if I'm sitting next to you and it's a silent part of the movie, I'm going to hear your phone vibrate. You flipping on your phone to see who it is, will light up your screen causing more of a disturbance.

Obviously, you weren't brought up with manners but in a public theater, you should show some common courtesy to others. You are an asshat and I will say something.

I'm really honored that he decided to make that very insightful post being it only his 42nd in 3 years.

So we can't eat popcorn and candy at theaters any longer, since slavery doesn't exist.

Here's my view on it. If you can't abide by the theater's rules, which were made to ensure the enjoyment of the majority of their customers, then don't do business with said theater. Turn off all electronic devices before the movie starts or leave. Pretty simple for the majority of us, but there are a few with thick skulls around here apparently.

Just to be clear, I'm not one to sit in a movie and send out texts or make calls.

When I go to a movie, it is with my wife and that is it. I am there to see the movie. However we have a three year old that we leave with my in laws or sitter. I always have my phone for this reason...the just in case factor.

I also carry a phone for work. When I am on call, that phone is on.

I find these reasons acceptable in this day and age. If you don't, well I really don't care.

Since people can be more belligerent with their cell phones and other behavior, let's condone the less annoying.

I better watch it though, if I say something to someone on their phone it just may be Dartworth.

I still don't understand why you can't just do your texting/voice calls out in the lobby in those cases you mentioned.

And that's fine. If you get a call, leave the theater and answer it/reply to the voicemail. I really can't see you getting a text message from your babysitter or work, but if you do - leave the theater to reply. This is the basis of manners. Inconvenience yourself so that you don't inconvenience others.
