All theaters tell you to turn-off your phones. Unfortunately, some people don't think it applies to them. Kudos to the manager and staff.

I don't mean turn them off. I mean leave them at home/in your car. If you're seen with a cell phone in the building, you are out. It pisses me off that much. It blows when you're into the atmosphere of the movie (the only reason to go to a large theater) and then you're pulled out of it by a phone ring, someone talking loudly ("CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?!?"), or a bright ass screen.

Texting in the movies is one of the most irritating things I've ever experienced. Actually, people glued to their cell phones 24/7 annoy me in general. You're not that important that someone will miss you if you don't talk to them on your cell phone for a grand total of 2 hours out of 24 each day. Get over it OP.

EDIT: Just to make a point, I'm 18 years old and I think this way. I love texting just as much as any other kid (I send A LOT of texts daily) but there are more important things like my family and friends that I'm with. Speaking of which, friends that text consistently when I hang out with them annoy me. It seems like you should be enjoying who you're with, not who's on the other end of the line.

Do you know why they say turn it off? It's because they don't want you getting calls. The policy wasn't designed with texting in mind. Stop whining about cell phones. Like I said, there are people who get up and go to the bathroom or refill their drinks/popcorn. That's far more disturbing.

Cell phone RINGS are annoying, but people texting/playing games... geez those are not even distracting. If you think watching someone's screen is more important than the movie, then maybe you have ADD.

If that is the case, why was the OP's phone taken away? Maybe, b/c the policy also means texting/playing games on your phone? Looks like you're in the minority b/c the majority of people can't stand these type of distractions in the middle of a movie.

I "accidentally" dumped my soda on some dumbass highschool kid who decided to talk on his phone during a movie a few months ago. It was rather amusing.

Oh, and I think you are forgetting to tell us something about your story. Because theres no way a cop would notice a 10 second text message, especially enough to pinpoint who was doing it out of an entire theatre. I call shens or BS.

How else can you explain his presence next to you all of a sudden? Do you think he was standing over your shoulder the whole time just waiting for you to use your phone?

You were wrong.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I think the OP isn't giving us the full story. He was probably texting throughout the whole movie and it finally irked someone enough to report him.

Bluntly said, you are all full of shit

A silent phone doesnt bother ANYONE, and you probably wont notice it unless you are looking for one
Like someone said already, people eating popcorns is A HELL OF A LOT MORE distracting, why dont they ban popcorns then? And what about people sneezing etc? Give me a break

Having said this, I never check my phone until the "commercial break", but I dont get bothered by anyone either, unless they answer a call, thats just dumb

Unless they are eating popcord with a flashlight shining on their face, it's certainly NOT more distracting than someone texting. The backlights on those devices weren't made primarily so you can see them in the dark-- they were made primarily so you can see them in broad daylight. In a pitch-black theatre room they are distracting as hell.

It's a PITA and the manager did a great job. Just the other week I went to watch Harry Potter and this older gentlemen left his phone on ring and let it ring two or three times before answering. You would figure that perhaps it as an accident and that he would switch it either to off or silent. Nope. A few minutes later, the phone rings again and he answers it, takes the call and hangs up. Then about 10 or 15 minutes later it rings once more and he takes the call, answers it and hangs up. That is what you call a douche bag my friends.

A few notes, yes people getting up to use the crapper is distracting but we all
understand and don't get annoyed. If you set the phone on vibrate and go to the
lobby to talk or text that would be non-intrusive to those around. Me, I would just
shut the damm thing off for a few hours and enjoy the flick. Lastly, a lot of ignorant
types will not care and will leave the phone on full ring during the show. Can you
imagine 5-6 hip-hop ringtones in one movie??? oh, the humanity..

No one mentioned that someone could use the phones video to record the movie & upload it. How do you think new release movies get around on the net, and why the quality is usually so bad.
How would the manager know the video quality or features of a given phone. Some phones are high tech enough to record a movie in a theater.
Just another reason to ban all phone use during the movie...period.
No one really knows what you are really up to.
If someone had their phone out for a long period of time, I can see others telling the staff.
Sounds like you had yours out pretty long, to have management see you and take action.
More to the story???

had to kick some people out in a theater today for cell phone, multiple people actually.
it was a sold-out theater for Rush Hour 3, and mostly all young kids of a certain... well, regardless, they were loud and obnoxious. Due to complaints earlier in the day, they had some of us ushers stand in the theater to manage the crowd. Well, got to a point, management said that anyone with a cellphone out had to be asked to leave. I'm a little more forgiving than I should be, and myself only kicked one person out (was talking on the phone), but I gave a lot of warnings with my sternest of voice to many a kid. They were good till the last 20 minutes, and as cruel and fun as I thought it would be to kick someone out right before the ending, I saw to it to let it slide because no one was complaining to me and thus I didn't care as much as I could have.
Regardless. Don't sit there and text, with the phone glaring in the middle of your lap. Take some courtesy to hide it, like in a purse like some girls did. Still busted them, cuz it was fun.
That light on your screen can be seen by EVERYONE behind you. So cut it out.

My phone vibrating and me typing a few words is nothing compared to normal theater distractions. People getting up and coming back. People spilling their m&m's. Slurping their drinks. Crunching their popcorn.

Now please keep in mind I am not writing a book on my BB... just answer a question or two.

However, if you were being louder than the normal distractions and were actually disturbing other movie watchers, that's a different story.

so you would inconviance and dispoint your family because you can't wait an hour? nice.

pesonally i think if they have to ask someone to not text and the person has a hissy fit and demands a refund i dont think the place should give it to them.

Its people like this that made me get a decent Home theatre.

I'm certainly not going to leave my wife and child behind. My wife understands that my work is important and that the messages have to be answered. She feels the same way I do about the subject.

If the email is a generic email or notification of something not important it goes right back in the holster.

Give me a f&cking break. I have a BB and if I'm on call, I check who it is (it's on vibrate), and if it IS an emergency, I get up and leave the theater and answer it OUTSIDE (INCLUDING TEXTING).

That's why I stopped going to movie theaters, and just built one at home. F&cking ass hats with their retarded kids that they can't control making all kinds of noise, people kicking my seat, people talking and RETARDS ANSWERING (TEXTING) THEIR PHONES. F%cking irritating as hell!

Oh, and I think I need to go and put my application into one of these theaters. I'd LOVE to have some b!tch come up to me asking for his money back after answering a phone during a movie. I would get so much joy out of telling him to f&ck off!

Someone replying to a text message after their phone vibrates ruins the movie for you?

Seriously guys... A phone vibrates, you can't hear or see it. The individual takes their phone out of holster which could make a tiny bit of noise. I doubt louder than the sound from the movie. Their screen lights up which has got to be the most disturbing part but I have never been blinded. I think I have seen the screen a few times. They type their text again silently. And then they send the message and put the phone away.

I fail to see where any of this silent activity affects you. Other than the screen lighting.

On another note, do you guys all believe the plane will crash if you leave your phone on?

I work at a movie theater as well and usually we give a warning before we kick people out. What I'd like to know is why is it so hard to disconnect yourself from your phone for two hours? What really is so important that you need to check the phone constantly? Is voice mail and the fact that phones store text messages for later viewing not good enough? What do people do when they sleep? Wake up every 30 minutes to check the phone? Yes, the backlight on cell phones is insanely distracting, in my opinion, more distracting than people munching on popcorn (which, as an usher, I wish was banned to the far reaches of hell) and people getting up to go to the bathroom. If you seriously need to check your phone that bad, get up and get out of the theater. You're paying more attention to your phone than to the movie so it's not like you're going to miss anything.

BTW, this post is not referring to any one person, just people in general...

The problem is that I seriously doubt that this was situation in OP's case. If you , just once, receive a text iwth your phone on vibrate (which you can actually hear quite well a few rows away during a quiet scene), quickly and discreetly read it, and send a ten-second reply, there's almost no way anyone would have enough time to identify you, report you to the manager, and have an usher/security brought in.

More than likely the OP had been texting on and off throughout the whole movie-- he just happened to get caught during his last text. That's the only explanation for how a police officer and theatre manager could descend on his seat a mere 10 seconds after receiving a text message and him beginning to send a reply.

ATOT's general idea of movie etiquette involves everyone strapped down with gags on.

OP, you got harassed, in your situation I would've told both the manager and the cop to go screw themselves. Why? Because without fail, every damn time I went to see a movie some jackass decides he wants 2 liters of coke and everyone else gets to deal with his inability to drink through a straw and the inevitable bladder issues.

Let's all send a letter of thanks to that manager, and the employess that escorted him out of the theatre. I'm sure glad to hear they do take the interests of the theatre parton to mind and weed out the asshats.
