hey, so I just got hired and started work today. I couldn't find my birth certificate or social security card this morning or tonight. no idea where they would be because I can't remember the last time I would have even used them (maybe to get my drivers' permit?).

also, I don't have a passport - never been out of the country.

do I have any options? the employer needs proof of my eligibility to work in the US along with some form of government ID. I have military IDs, student IDs, a drivers' license, but no kind of paperwork. I just had my dad order a new birth certificate but it will take 10-30 business days to process.

do I have any options? kinda need this ASAP

You have your military ID so if you are active or even reserve call your command and get them to send you a copy of both.
They should both be in your service records.

You never cease to be special.

sick dude

called it

Yea, I had a feeling it was at home and I didn't lose it, but I'm really glad my mom did find it.

Had my mom not found it, I would have called the health department, social security office, and then the LTC. thanks for the help

small update: I emailed the HR girl when I got into the office this morning explaining everything and attached a scan of the birth certificate my mom sent me, then she called me and said she would just use the scan for now, but wants to see the physical copy. that will be delivered to her before noon tomorrow. that was stressful - so glad everything worked out. tyvm to the people who helped

I know this posting is old, but it popped up when I was doing a search for the same topic. I also found information that might be helpful for others that are having this issue(my info comes from the social security website itself). The website says that "Employers, however, do not have the legal authority under the Social Security Act to require an employee to show his or her Social Security card" it also has a link where the employer can easily(for free) verify your eligibility to work in the u.s.

Still a relevant topic , although resurrected from an old thread. It would have been nice if you had shown a link to where the employer can verify eligibility to work. I have switched jobs a few times, the last time not quite 2 years ago, and have been required to show the physical proof of eligibility (SS card for me, I do not have a passport) each time. The last time was for a major university. I have never understood why this could not be verified on line in this day and age, with a single picture ID like a driver's license to prove identity.

I last lost my SS card some time ~1995 or 96 I think. I was still in high school. Haven't had one from then on, and have never needed one. I don't recall needing it to get my first passport and I certainly never needed it for any job applications or to be hired. I didn't need it for a mortgage loan, either.

ditto all that with my birth certificate (though I think I still have a copy of that somewhere).

Tell that to the Dept of Labor when they audit your employee records and check to see if your I-9 forms were property recorded.

There's e-verify but it's not mandatory (for some reason) and it's something you have to setup.
