hey, so I just got hired and started work today. I couldn't find my birth certificate or social security card this morning or tonight. no idea where they would be because I can't remember the last time I would have even used them (maybe to get my drivers' permit?).

also, I don't have a passport - never been out of the country.

do I have any options? the employer needs proof of my eligibility to work in the US along with some form of government ID. I have military IDs, student IDs, a drivers' license, but no kind of paperwork. I just had my dad order a new birth certificate but it will take 10-30 business days to process.

You need a picture ID (you have) and another form of ID from column 2.

Most places you can get a birth certificate within 1 week if you are willing to pay the fees.

I had to pay $30 to have mine sent from IN. Did it all online and had it within a couple days.

IIRC, the application for the social security card is as good as the real thing

Contact your Secretary of State about your SS Card, it won't come for a bit though. For your BC, you need to go to your State Department that handles those types of things. Once again, you won't get the second copy for a while (unless you pay extra).

Usually if you go to the county seat of your birth you can get an official copy that day or quickly.

If you can't find actual ID, bring driver's license etc. and your social security number and see if they can verify with government while you get replacement (?)

I was born in center city Philadelphia and am in NY right now. I wonder if I can do this even tho Philly is so big. Also, I wonder if my brother can go pick it up. Would mean asking him to go down to the courthouse for it for potentially a few hours, then me taking a 3 hour train home to get it from him and 3 hour train or bus immediately back to NYC.

it looks like you could get a new SS card the same day but you need a birth certificate? I'm gonna call and ask if military ID is acceptable. pretty sure you have to be a citizen to be in the military - it's stupid that's not proof enough

Doesn't work for employment eligibility purposes, only for wage reporting.

This may be true.

Its been 5 years since I had to do hiring paperwork, so I'm going off memory. I remember I9 and the 3 stupid columns.

Most likely. The recipt verifies that you qualify for an SS card. How long ago were you made the offer of employment?

because its all about what the I9 wants. Its a big deal if an employee works (earns pay) without proving he has the right to work.

A DD-214 is a list B document. He needs to establish work eligibility per List C.

I got the offer letter the 19th via email and the new hire paperwork probably a few days later. I check for my SS card, but couldn't find it. just assumed my birth certificate would be easy to find. definitely a mistake on my part. also, I didn't even know having either would be a requirement (first new job in a looong time)

No flexibility. 3 days post start date or he can't work.
