even if it isn't a certified one with a raised seal, it looks like there's a social security office in the Bronx that opens at 7am. I could go home tomorrow, get the less official certificate, take it back, go to the office right when it opens, get a temporary SS card, be 15-20mins late for work and use that for verification? the social security office's website seems less strict and hasn't mentioned anything about if the birth certificate needs a raised seal
For a replacement Social Security card, If you were
born in the US, all you need for a replacement card is 1 current, unexpired ID.....
no photocopies. If you insist on bringing the birth certificate, it has to be an original OR certified copy (and by certified, I mean raised seal, rubber stamp with signature, etc).
Because Bronx, NY has a Social Security Card Center (820 Concourse Village West, Second Floor Bronx, NY 10451-3638) you MUST go there to apply for a replacement Social Security card if that's where you live or receive mail. In NYC, all the boroughs except for Staten Island have a dedicated
card center.
Although it takes time for a card to be mailed, you can go to any Social Security office about getting a document with your number....but if you want verification, there's
SSA-89...or if your employer participates, Social Security Number Verification Service (
SSNVS).
FYI, you cannot request a new/replacement SS card online; you can download a form but you have to either go to a field office / applicable card center OR mail in the SS-5 form with the original document(s).
For employment verification, use
e-verify...iirc you can go online, or contact Social Security if you have problems online.
