1500 can buy you an older used car, or he could have been going to put a down payment on a car.
for a guy that has established threads of why he needs a car, and then for this to happen to him, i'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
As I understand it he was going to buy a newer car as in 2005-up.

Thanks for the kind words everyone... last night i felt like it was the end of the world. I'll get through this though. It's just a set back. I'm chalking the money up as a loss, i think the police are going the steal my money... why wouldn't they give it back? It's just scumbags win in this society and the little guy that's trying his ****** best gets the shaft. I woke up this morning dizzy and my jaw felt locked up. my leg isn't working right. I'll just have to bus/train whatever i can to get where i need to go. I bought a new cellphone and wallet today. I'm just going to try to move forward with this. The police said there is some victims relief fund i can contact. I'll be calling them. Thanks for the support. To those that don't believe me, go ****** yourself... and eat your words when i get the police report.

Most of the crime in an area is perpetrated by a few high profile punks. I'd guess that they knew who it was immediately after the OP or witnesses described them.
