If your going to invest in 4 video cards then you better have a kick butt motherboard.

ASUS is #1 imo, #2 Gigabyte "cheesy uefi"

Get the Maximus or Rampage for quad GPU's. gl

Your throwing a cheap motherboard to trust your 4 video cards ? AsRock is the budget version of ASUS headquarters. Its a good mobo but its not a Asus.

For me anyone who wants to do 3 to 4 GPUs, for heavens sake invest in a good motherboard,, Maximus or Rampage.. then your good to go...... You have 2k in video cards and a cheapo 150 dollar as*....mobo. Send it back and pay about 200 more and get a real motherboard for a quad GPUs like Maximus and Rampage. gl

Oh if its 2x SLI or Xfire you can do that already. So yes you can have 2 cards dual GPU.

Its a good board for 2x video cards.

You want more you need a Rampage or Maximus. thx gl

The only quirk that I have found is that the board won't support Dimm's above 2133. I have 2 different 64GB sets of GSkill ram @ 2400 but neither will run above 2133. One other thing you should make note of is that on the LSI ports you go all SAS or all Sata on all 8 ports but you can't run both types at the same time.

I have built over 50 new systems and fixed 100's of others over the years. My first was using a 486-25 CPU. It is the fourth generation of processor ever built. The first was known as the 086 which was short for 8086. The second was the 286 then the 386 etc,.. That goes way back to the stone ages for you guys. Back then you needed to know all the dos commands and create your own autoexec.bat files with all dos commands in the file so that your sound, video, and any other peripheral were included in it as well. Most of you don't have a clue about those days. Windows 3.0 needed an autoexec.bat file for each program you ran. It would be included in each program's folder. When you installed a new program the file would already be there but you had to modify each one to include the specific hardware you were using. We've come a long way since then. I have been an AMD fan for most of those years starting with the advent of the Pentium 2's. I went AMD because at that time they were much cheaper and faster than Intel.:\ Recently I built a system for my bother-in-law and he insisted on an Intel platform. No problem with doing that but I did notice a few things that any AMD board has that Intel does not. Intel only gives you 2 native 6Gb/s ports and 2 extras running on a different chip. With AMD all your ports are 6Gb/s all running off the same main chipset.:hmm: I decided to build my first Intel system last year in June. I bought a RIVE M/B and found the same issues with it as well. If you are only running 2 drives then you don't have any issues. I have 4 drives with my system drive being a SSD drive. The Pcie slots have only 2 at 16x with the rest being 8x or less. I found this very restricting and was beginning to realize why Intel's CPU's were faster. They minimize all the extra board functions to accomplish it. The system ran good enough with the 3930K and 32GB of ram in Quad channel. I started overclocking to see what my system could do. I have always had 4 or 5 full Futuremark bench-marking versions and I bought 2- EVGA GTX680 Superclocked Video cards in sli. No matter what I tried I could not beat some of my old AMD benchmark scores. I had my CPU cranked up to 4.875Ghz stable under prime95 and Aida64. I even had it go as far as 4.9 which was good for Aida64 but the temps were in the high 80's using prime95. It throttled back with prime after a certain amount of time went by. I decided to go all out on my next build. :twistedsee next post)

I went looking for an Intel motherboard with all the functionality of an AMD system. I looked at optional Raid cards and found them to be quite expensive when you want one that gives you Raid-5 functionality. I finally found the board of my dreams... The ASRock Extreme 11. It had it all and I decided to give it the best of everything I could buy.
CPU = Intel 3970X :biggrin:
Memory = 64 GB GSkill RipjawsZ @2400 10-12-12-31
Video = 4x EVGA GTX680 Classified 4GB running at 16x/16x/16x/16x :awe::biggrin:
Monitors: 4x Samsung S27A850D professional wall mounted for 4k Super HD :awe::biggrin:
SSD = 2x OCZ Vertex 4 512GB Raid-0 :thumbsup:
HDD = 4x 1TB Raid-0 2x 2TB non Raid WD Cav/Blk drives
PSU = EVGA SuperNova 1500W w/monitoring software :thumbsup:
Cooling = Corsair H100i
Fan controller: NZXT Senty II dual bay 5 fan
Case = Enermax Fulmo GT (Huge case) :awe::biggrin:
This case has it all. It has 4 top mounted Usb3 ports and a hot-swap port. I can fit my H100i with push/pull completely inside the top of the case and still have over an inch of clearance for the M/B. You can install an H80i instead of the H100i and have room for a second PSU. The case comes with 3x 180mm 700 - 1000 rpm fans and has an integrated 7x multi-option led setting button and fan speed controller. I bought extra fans specific to the case from FrozenCPU.(their shipping costs are outrageous) 5x 140mm Apollish Vegas fans using twister bearing technology. Speed: 700-1500rpm - Air Flow CFM: 42.4-90.8 Noise at minimum: 15(dBa) Static Pressure (mm-H2O): 0.855-1.772 I have a total of 10 fans not including the H100i fans. It can house 15 fans. It has 10 drive bays and 4- 5-1/4" front bays. I am ordering 4 more fans; 1- 180mm + 3- 140mm when they get them in stock. Each fan has 16 led's in them. It is a new model so there are no supplies available locally yet. I paid more for shipping with FrozenCPU than I paid for the fans. I won't be doing that again. Overall I paid $9000.00 just for the computer not including the monitors.

Just in case your wondering, I have the Adobe CS6 Master-collection and I am at the moment creating websites that use multiple suite functions including Flash videos that I am creating and re-rendering into flash for the internet. This will most likely be my last personal build for years to come.

The RIVE is Sandy Bridge Extreme the Asrock board is an Ivy bridge you can't compare the two, then you compare them to a AMD board? Asus RIVE Were not made to run on air, If you know so much you'd know that and would have bought something else. The RIVE is made for LN-2 Or water cooling at least and not just the CPU also need to cool the V-regs.
If you need I can post some scores for you..............

Sure there are quirks - its one of the loudest motherboards you'll ever had the pleasure of owning. That whiny fan is really really whiny.

I was referring to the ASRock X79 Extreme 11 not the Z77 but either way ASRock offers much more included in the motherboard than any other motherboard manufacturer has to offer. So far the board is a very good platform with all the added features that mainstream boards just don't have.
________________________________________________________________________________
If I wanted to spend an extra grand or so I would mod the whole board and video cards with a full water cooling system. I just use an H100i for the cpu. The case I bought for my RIVE wouldn't fit any full water cooling system. Besides there were only 2 vid cards in it and I can tweak the fan curve to get them at full spin when they hit 80C. They are quite loud at full spin and you can just hear the air whooshing out the back of the cards. I never had any overtemp problems with the vid cards so why bother. I did notice the mosfets would cause throttling if I used higher busclocks by changing the strap to 125. Then as you say I would need to water cool them as well. If I'm going to go through all that effort why don't I used liquid nitrogen to go for a world record. Hey liquid helium is even colder. I want to see what I can get out of it without all the added problems that full water cooling brings. Constant monitoring of your coolant levels, yearly strip-downs to clean the whole cooling system. I like to get good scores without all the extra work and customizing. For my normal purposes I don't need it so why spend the time and money for a benchmark? Not practical in MHO.

The RIVE Isnt made for a case! It was made for exterme high end users. Yes if you want to over clock it then you'd know you have to ATLEAST water cool the MOFETS(your preaching to the quire now). Why are you highjacking the OP? I have no experience with the AsRock I(assumed he meant the Z77)so couldn't comment. The H100i is garbage, any prebuilt water cooling solution is made for kids who don't know what there doing with tons of money to toss into the wind but ofcourse you know this or don't you?

Well I have the Z77 E11, not X79. And from the week or so that it has been installed I absolutley LOVE it. I run 4 way Xfire so I dont hear the motherboard fan..............or any other noise

I still have 3 SATA ports unused on the board, and I could have 4 if I unplugged my hotswap bay. This thing is a beast and anyone who wants the absolute best of the best board I highly recommend this one. Somthing of note, not that it impacts performance at all; the first 3 PCIe lanes runn at PCI-e 3.0 X8 (when populated) but the 4th runs at PCI-e 2.0 X4. From what I have seen this doesnt affect performance at all, I saw a linustechtips video where he put an HD6990 in a PCI-e X1 slot and lost maybe 5% performance, thats with dual GPU's in one X1 lane.

Well I'm quite surprised. I thought you knew so much more. I looked at your 3D mark 11 score and I was actually quite disappointed with it. We both have the same CPU and I gather you are using the RIVE M/B as I was when doing this Benchmark. You have 2 AMD 7970's while I have 2 EVGA GTX680 Superclocked cards. They are both 2GB cards. Your Processor is clocked @ 5Ghz while mine was set at 4.8Ghz. I am only using the H100 for CPU cooling. Click this link to see my extreme score.

Well the truth is that I did run at 4.9 But my CPU temps were in the low 80's and I don't like running it at those temps. I got it running at 4.875 with more manageable temps but under Prime 95 It down-clocked due to Mosfet temps. I did have it manually set to 10v and I should have set it lower but I was wasting time and I wanted to get to Vid card O/C's. That is where you really start to get higher scores. The CPU core speed doesn't play as big a role in vid card scores. @ 4.9 the vid cards clock a little less. Probably due to the power supply load. I was running a 4 year old HX1000 which over time doesn't put out the same load values. When you do Watt calculations and you set your capacitor aging to a higher value then your wattage need increases a lot. My new system should blow that one away as soon as I get the last few items shipped in. I've been waiting 3 months for special order parts. They are scheduled to arrive in three more days. They have finally shipped them. These parts are not available in North America. I had to special order them in directly from Taiwan. It took a long time. I had already pre-ordered them on Jan 17th before I even ordered some of the other parts. I knew it was going to be a problem so I put the order in as soon as I got my Case. That was the first thing I got because I wanted to measure it to make sure I had lots of room if I decided to go full water cooling at a later date. I am running 3 fans controllers to handle all the case fans. There are 13 fans not including the 4 push pulls on the H100i. They have software fan controllers. Nothing smaller than 140mm. There are 4 side fans that are 180mm fans that can run @ 1200 RPM. They each push in 120CFM. OH i did forget I do have 1 120mm fan directly under the CPU socket blowing in from the right side of the case. It will cool the CPU from underneath the M/B. One day I will buy a complete water cooling system but from what I am expecting I won't really need the extra O/C'ing ability for now. With 480CFM coming in directly over the complete M/B I don't think the mosfet temps will get that high. This case is twice the size of my reference system case that my scores were based on. I have a CM Haf XM case and the size really restricts the air flow in the case. My H100 only had room for push fans.

I got this board simply to use as a media centre. I like the idea of sticking all of my 13X 3TB Seagates on it where I store my movies etc. Did a fresh install, Win7 Ultimate. Works great until I do a Windows update. all 8 of the drives on the SAS/SATA ports disappear after a few minutes or sometimes after a couple of hours. But they always disappear until I reboot but then disappear again in time. I tried reinstalling the drivers ect and worked hard with the BIOS settings but still the same.
PLEASE PLEASE any suggestions. I would be most grateful.
