Lower F number is a wider aperture. It also results in less depth of field. Stopping down means increasing the f number and making a bigger depth of field.

Stopping down is the opposite of opening up the lens.

I just looked that up. I was confused before lol.

I love my D50. I was selling my PSP a couple of days ago in the FS/FT forum, and someone actually commented (positively, of course) on the generic pics I took of it with my D50 and SB-600 speedlight . Check out some of my other pics at my site in my sig. Not many there, and not the best looking collection because of the different frames and such, but I plan on redoing that soon once I digitize my signature to stick on there. All those pics are from the D50, most from my Sigma 70-300DG, and a couple with the 50mm f1.8. I have a few more pics from my 50mm f1.8 that I will possibly throw up there as well.

Aphex and I have been in talks regarding starting a photography site of our own, so watch for it possibly sometime soon .

I like the cat pic.

I recently got a Canon Rebel XT and I having a great time playing with it.

Here is a gallery of a few of my pics.

Pictures

The tiger pic in there was taken with my PowerShot A80. Rest were with my Rebel XT.

cool, but according to this Review, the d50 uses uncompressed NEF. I would stay away from uncompressed NEF.

Stopping down means making the lens aperture smaller, hence the big number (2.8 to 4, or 4 to 8)
This usually for sharper image.

Open up is the other way around (f4 to f2.8)
This produce really shallow DoF.

LordSegan,
I assume you have the 50mm f/1.8 lens.
I think this lens sweet spot is from f4 to f/11.
But for me f2.8 is good enough for me if I need natural light.
f1.8 DoF is razor thin so be careful.

Agreed. I have a f/1.4 lens 50mm Canon lens and at that aperature my cat's face would be in focus but her body would be out of focus.

Like this.

The cat pic looks great. I am in the market for a new digital and this post has me thinking about going the SLR route

Definitely go for an SLR. You will not regret it. Just remember that it's no point and shoot camera. It's bigger, costs more and the quality lenses are not cheap either.

I got that for my starter lens with my 350D. Cheap and works great. I harassed my cat for a good week or two after I got my camera. They are a good learning experience, especially if you have a wild one.

Care to explain why? I've never heard someone say that compressed is better than uncompressed (if that's what you're hinting at). The NEF's that come out of my D50 always look fantastic, are easy to pp.

My guess? You'll retort with a response that describes something 90% of us D50 owners wouldn't be able to tell if we looked at it or could care less about.

Nice. But I'm going to wait out until dslr shrinks down to the size of a deck of cards. Until then my grainy little 4MP Canon will do.

I don'thave a ton of cash to spend on a camera and was looking at the Canon A520 ($200 is about my max). I can get one from ZipZoomFly for $175. Is this a bad way to go? It seems to get really good reviews.

Heh, I doubt that they'll get much smaller than they already are. Hell, the SLR lens mount itself is the size of a soda can lid.

Those are pretty good for your first shots. One thing I would have done is cropped a little of the left side and top of the cat shot off though. It doesn't add much to the photograph, and it puts your cat in the center of the frame. Putting your subect in the center seems like it would make sense, because that's how your eyes focus on things, but it makes photographs look boring.

The first pic, with a curves adjustment and slight crop: Text.

What can I say. NEFFING is just bad.

All the related documentation you will need.

I'm confused. Did the OP buy the 50mm f/1.8 lens? I assumed he didn't until he started talking about opening up to 1.8. The D50 kit lens is the 18-55mm 3.5-4.5 lens, right?

Anyway, the 50mm 1.8 lenses for both canon and nikon are absolute must buys regardless, great bargains, so cheers to the OP if he got one.

I kind of like 1.8 shots of cats, if done well. It makes the cats seem to be more needful of attention for some reason.

Yep, proves that you don't need the 800 dollar 135mm 2.0L for great portraits
