and Im hating it. Its not anywhere close to the smoothness/fluidity of the Ipad. I've owned the Ipad, Ipad 2 and Ipad 3 prior to my Nexus purchase. Anything I can do to make it more responsive and fluid? Cant return it. A friend got it from the USA. For horizontal orientation, I had to download a app which would then allow me to lock the orientation....

Odd, I thought the Nexus 10 was rather smooth and fluid, the problem I had was that there were almost no apps that took advantage of the Hi DPI screen. It became a tease at that point.

If I had a N10, I'd root + ROM. Sorry you're not enjoying it stock though.

The same reason why I didn't get it all along. They said with the Nexus 10 all smooth and fluid issues were taken care of. Not one bit amused. here. Some apps are opening in slow motion (transitions type effects). Horrible lag. Its like installing IOS 6 on the Ipad 1. Never had that problem on the Ipad.

I'm new to the android system and will have to read up on the rooting part. Will do it before the end of the week though. What's the best guide out there?

What? The Nexus 10 is a pretty damn smooth device. I don't think it's as smooth as the Nexus 4, but it's smoother than the Nexus 7. Yes I own all 3. In terms of Android devices it's pretty good. If you compare against an iPad, yeah. Your 2 year old iPad 2 still kicks ass in terms of smoothness.

I thought Nexus 10 comes with 4.2?

OP: If it irritates that much, then look for a way to get rid of it. No reason to be miserable over a tablet.

But if you are serious about improving the UI smoothness, here is what I did on my Nexus 7. (not 10, so take it with a grain of salt)

1. Get root privilege ("rooting") and download an app that exposes CPU governor.
2. Check the CPU profile. It's kind of like SpeedStep/Cool'nQuiet of Android. I believe the default profile of my Nexus 7 (Android 4.2) is "On Demand". Change it to "Interactive". -> This step doesn't involve custom roms or overclocking.
3. Go to Developer options under settings and tick "Force GPU rendering".

The step #2 may decrease the battery life by ~5% (guesstimate). I didn't measure the exact impact in a scientific manner (don't have time for such tests that will take hours) but it feels that way. In any case my Nexus 7 is much more smooth and fast. There are still some rough edges - I've found Android's hiccups are related mostly to live contents (e.g. live wallpapers, live widgets, etc.) and those may be hard to overcome. But removing them should help. Frankly I am OK with occasional stutters caused by live updates.

There must be an issue with you N10, They are pretty smooth devices, it's not 100% smooth like an iPad 2/3, but the difference shouldn't be that large.

Curious, why did you switch from the iPad?

I'll this during the weekend if I dont get rid of it by then.

I've been using computers for the last 22 years and have been a sucker for speed, fluidity, responsive and lag free computing. The iPad has all that. Opening up big webpages makes Chrome stutter. Opening up some 1080p or higher videos also makes it framy. Jeez, scrolling picasa pics and youtube videos was at times like a slideshow! Opening the settings screen also showed some lag.

My dad just got a Note II today and its nowhere as bad as the Nexus 10 when it comes to lag and speed. I would say infact its very close the the fluidness and responsiveness of the Ipad.

Why I got it? Just for a change. All my previous purchases have been IOS devices.

Some people may hate touchwiz, but Samsung optimise the browser and OS really well for their chipsets. Google can't seem to do the same with their Nexus devices.

You may also want to check to see what apps you are running and your settings to see how many things you are allowing to synch/etc.

I discovered that Ad Block Plus was causing me connection issues and have turned off a number of Google apps from synching(Google Currents, Play Books, Play Magazines, Play Movies & TV, etc).

I also don't use Chrome but Dolphin and FF. Some apps aren't 100% smooth and I blame the app for being buggy. But overall, the smoothness factor hasn't been a show-stopper compared to iOS.

Something is wrong. Maybe try a factory reset. Mine is very smooth & fluid & still stock. I just haven't had time to root it. Head over to XDA.

Bought 2 Nexus 10 32gb (Walmart last week) for X-mas gift for my son.

Unlocked and rooted then updated to 4.2.1

Very smooth, compared to Ipad 3.

Love to be able to customize look and feel, playback multiple video formats, web browsing is fast. Hate my wife's Ipad, locked down device (where is the frickin back button!!!).

My only gripe with current Android Jelly bean is the lack of Flash support. ESPN still uses flash along with other sites.

Workarounds are available but cant understand why they chose not to support it.

Nexus 10 >Ipad 3

Ipad ecosystem just feels locked down, anti-freedom, anti-America.

Peace

Maybe you're ok with the whole rooting, flashing whatever thing. But before all that, is it running 4.2 and if not, can you update it to 4.2 without going through a song and dance?

Just so you know, Chrome currently runs like absolute crap. There are alternatives on Google Play that are far faster than Chrome. People who switch to dolphin browser say it's a night and day difference on the Nexus 10.

So it's a good bet to switch to different browser until google fixes chrome for android.

You don't have to do anything. It will auto-update to 4.2.

If it's just the browser then install the AOSP browser it blows chrome away, you need to root but that's not a big deal. I've tried other browsers as well and imo none of them come close to it in performance. Also the full screen browsing for it is really nice.

Aside from the browser I haven't had many problems on my N7 with fluidity/speed, I can't speak for the N10 since I've never used one.

That's what I was hoping for the OP to do but Post #2 made it sound more complicated than what I thought it would be.

Back to the OP, so are you running 4.2?

One of the great things about having a Nexus device is getting the updates first. But it sounds like it's not such a great thing for the Nexus 10. Seems like Nexus 7 owners have been complaining a lot about Android 4.2 and 4.2.1 too.
