Just got the wireless network setup.

Struggled a bit last night. Could not get a WAP connection to the cable modem. After setting the speed to 10Mbit instead of 100Mbit it finally worked.
The signal level in the next room is poor. DSLReports reports 600kb down for him and I have the full 3Mbit connected with CAT5.

Maybe the speed internally on my network will be better. Still got one rig to hook up down stairs.

odd for next room to be that low. what are the walls made of? crazy stuff? ehehe... try changing channels. use something like netstumbler to check if other networks are on the same channel. there are other passive scanners non broadcasting ones also. 600k is kinda slow for even b type wireless

Could the connection between my computers be faster. I did this test with DSLReports.
The wall seems to be mostly wood AFAIK.

no, wireless b is 11mbits alone. even after overhead and all that junk even b gets atleast 3mbits pretty easy. i've streamed that fast to my laptops at b, you use g, thats much faster. my routers g too(linksys g with booster), but my client cards are a mix.
try other channels. 1 6 or 11. could be lots of wiring in that wall i guess, or pipes........ wood alone isn't bad. concrete/water/metal..thats bad.

Maybe I need a booster then? But wouldn't I need booster for the 'Receiving' end too?

Try just moving the router a few inches in every direction. It really can make a difference...

i moved my wap a couple feet and it really helped the signal to one of my pc's upstairs

its a bit of voodoo magic, you just gotta fiddle with it

Cool.

Even if it is slow ATM it's pretty cool. I got the 128 bit WEP encryption going so it should be OK for protection.
Just have to set up the firewall and it should be a breeze.

Tty different channels, 11 works for me best. Also have someone manually adjust the antennas while you are connected. Believe it or not it is kind of like tuning rabbit ears on an old TV. Also you can do a search for wireless parabolic antennas that can be made out of card stock cardboard for pennies to actually increase strength. Or even go with the pringle can model.

Heh, weird.

The router is now 15 feet from the receiver yet the power is on the low end of normal.
It is not in the line of sight but just around a corner.
