Just had my hand on an un-announced Motorola phone product...

I was checking out at Target when I noticed the olive-skinned guy behind me was talking on what looked to be a cool cell phone I had never seen before. I thought it was a Sony Ericsson, so I asked him if that was what it was. He looked at me, smiled, and told me it was "an un-announced phone from Motorola". So, getting more bold, I asked him if I could hold it, and he let me. The keypad/screen was the same as the RAZR. The phone was about as thin and about 2/3 the length of a RAZR when opened. This one was not a flip-phone. The phone was much lighter than it looked but seemed longish. I gave it back to him and asked what it was called. He smiled again and kind of laughed. I asked if that was confidential since the phone had no label or markings, and he said, "Yes, I am just evaluating it." I asked him if it could play mp3s, and he said yes to that. I walked away saying, "I hope it has good reception because my V330 has terrible reception." His reply: "Well, this one will have better reception because non-flip phones have better reception than flip phones."

So, that was my ATOT-worthy convo in line at Target!

I never knew flip phones had worst reception than non-flipped phones.

Anyways, i'll probably be replacing my almost 3 yr old V600 with a second generation mp3 phone.

Either a SLVR L7 or the cheaper V180/V220 based L6, and since he said it plays MP3s, chances are its a SLVR. Someone on howardforums.com got his hands on a prototype, sounds nice, just ticks me off that Motorola has ditched EDGE and 1.3 MP cams on their new phones and gone back to class 10 GPRS and VGA. I'm happy I got a V635, I almost felt ticked about the sudden news of the RAZR V3i after I bought it, but no LED flash, and no EDGE (but a 1.3MP cam this time).

Nice looking phone, but I got my V505, it will do for a while. I got 2 V505's, one that was bought as a replacement for my malfunctioning V505 (wsant getting signal and dropped calls), which suddenly started to work after i bought the replacement one from ebay.

Oh well its good to have a spare.

I like the SLVR, but its been a while i have had a phone without a flip.

yep, the new SLVR, I'm waiting for it...I believe the model number will be U6, or is that the PEBL? I can't remember.

It's either the SLVR or the Samsung P300 to replace the RAZR

The SLVR was announced a while ago ... in any case there are a lot more cool RAZR like phones in the pipeline (I worked for motorola up until 3 months ago. We had 'unannounced' phones sometimes a year before they shipped).

My only guess....not being an antenna expert...is that you have more antenna options or maybe the ability to use a more ideal antenna. Whatever the case, I've only had one non-flip phone in 5 years and it only lasted me 4 months. Just bought a new flip to replace it.

BTW, the fact that the RAZR lacks all these advanced features just proves how dumb americans are when it comes to phones. I'm glad my RAZR knockoff has all the features it should (well, except a trans-flash slot).

PEBL = U6
SLVR = L7 (originally L8, renamed quickly after Moto realized that spelt out the word "late" )

See...I don't get this - I bought my RAZR because I wanted a phone that didn't have any "advanced features", was thin, had BT and looked good. I would prefer a phone without a camera, even. I only use my phone to call people, maybe a message here and there...that's it. I wanted the best looking and smallest phone available.

Well, most people, like me, want to have their cake and eat it too I'm glad I didn't have to settle for watered down RAZR (aside from the fact its not available in a CDMA version yet).

The L7 is basicly a candy bar style phone version of the Razr. No better features. Still a horrible camera, no edge, and the ones that people have been importing have been tri-band I belive, and when one guy on hofo tried to seem edit it for quadband he messed it up and had a $1000 paperweight . Not sure how that turned out.

So what phone do you use, exactly? When I bought mine, there was nothing out there that could compete with the RAZR's thinness. I guess in this case, the cake I want is a very basic cheesecake while yours is a 6' wedding cake.

stupid analogy.
