Sorry, I have a hard time sympathising. I fucking hate horses.

That's seriously fucked up. Do you hate dolphins too?

Well horses are responsible for killing Superman and burning down a chunk of Chicago so people have reasons to not like them.

Actually imagining a horse burning to death is sad though. They are beautiful animals.

If you're well off enough to own a computer, pay for internet access, cell phone, car and rent, you'll be fine when somebody steals your car. Because you can afford it, right?

A car isn't that much of an excess in today's world. I require it to go to work and make money, unless I want to walk for hours. Owning a horse is a great excess, often requiring the person to be very well off. At least, all the people I know who fancy horses are. Losing my car would set me a lot further back than them losing their horse, because my car is the most valuable thing I own and it is necessary for me to earn money.

That said, I wouldn't be too upset if my car caught on fire and broke. I'd find a way to live and do what I have to do. Being stolen is a different story, just because I would be pissed that someone had something of mine.

You ignored the computer part of the argument. In many areas of the country, it's cheaper to own, feed, and care for a horse, than it is to have a computer & pay for internet access. I know plenty of people who you would consider "poor" who own horses.

Yeah, no kidding. If this was somebody's dog there'd be far fewer caustic replies.

nope... if it were a dog, i'd be telling him to watch out for the korean neighbors, and to get some lysol stat.... burnt doggie hair stinks!

its an animal... i cant get attached over something that doesnt speak english... something that pisses and shits all over and doesnt wipe its own ass... something that costs thousands of dollars in 'vet bills' for a sneeze.

is it truly hard to believe people dont like pets?

That describes yourself at one point. Maybe even now.

Thanks for all the messages of support, I know it'd cheer my mum up to show her this thread if it wasn't for all the idiotic comments throughout.

Anyone who thinks that you have to invest money to look after a horse is a good enough excuse to find it amusing that two intelligent, emotionally aware animals died in a fire whilst my parents' dream which they have worked for for 40 years goes up in smoke is a sad bastard indeed.

That said, I wasn't expecting much less, and obviously slight regret hastily posting this on an internet forum!

I assume by these people you mean farmers.

That said, I use my computer for work to. Without it, I would be jobless. Also, even for farmers, is a horse and the food required to feed it as well as the land/shelter is needs cheaper than 500? I really don't see how that could be possible. That is how much my computer was. I get free internet access. It's slow, but free, so I deal with it.

Also, I don't live in any of these areas. I'm talking about the people in areas I live in, which makes a big difference obviously. In areas where few people live, owning a horse is less of a financial burden than in the city. Everyone in the city where I live who owns a horse and regularly rides it is pretty stuck up, probably with good reason. That is a damn expensive pet.

Even in farmland, why would people own a horse? It doesn't produce anything. Unless they use it to haul a carriage or ride it, I don't see why it is a necessity.

EDIT: Also, I don't know why you think I would consider them "poor". If you own a horse and a stable and land, you aren't poorer than me. I live in a tiny studio apartment in the ghetto.

Own or rent. In certain parts of the country land is cheap. I've been places where there's a mobile home on four acres with a roughly attached electric fence to keep the horses in. Throw up a plywood structure for hay and you're set. Some of these people make as little as $20k a year, household. They barter for hay and use 40 year old tack.

To be in horse sports (gymkhana, dressage, etc) you need money. To own horses, depending on where you are, you just need to be creative. A lot of the people that compete in my younger sisters' gaming shows are pretty low income for the Seattle WA standards.

[edit] Here you go: http://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/pet/1193338210.html
$400 rent for a house share/pasture share situation, with lower rent if you'll work. They expect to find somebody who would compromise on having a place of their own so they can keep their horse.

Lol I'll move out one day. It is all I can afford at the age of 18 though.

Either way, your comment is completely unrelated.

People value different things in life. Plenty of the horse people I know own a computer from 1992 and are on dialup. It's just not important to them. Instead being outside, spending time with an animal they love, learning new skills and being part of a very particular community means everything to them. They're willing to sacrifice and put up with a lot in order to keep those elements of their life. It brings them joy and satisfaction.

I never said that they weren't better off than you are - in fact, I'd bet that many of them ARE better off than you are - just that you would consider them poor. Since you live in a studio apartment in a city, I'm going to assume you make more money than many of the families I'm referring to. In fact, from your profile, I'm going to guess that your rent alone is similar to the entire take home income of some of the families I know. In my county, the average price of land broke $1000 per acre for the first time ever, last year. So, no, you don't have to be rich to own some land. A decent pole barn costs next to nothing to build, especially when you can get your wood from a local lumbermill for a small fraction of the cost of the same lumber at a Home Depot.

I know a family where the children only wear shoes if they're going to school or church, or there's snow on the ground. Otherwise, they're barefoot. They hand down the shoes from one sibling to the next (there are (six?) children (maybe seven). Their mother sews all the kids clothes - they don't go out and buy the clothes. They get on the bus, go to school in the morning, come home in the afternoon, and do chores around the house. They don't have even a single cell phone. They don't have a television, no cable, no satellite, and certainly no console games. No computer, no internet. AFAIK, they've never been to a movie theater, nor would they spend any of their money on such entertainment. They grow the majority of their food in a garden. Poor enough?

But, they all work incredibly hard for what they do have, and they take great care of it. They own horses. They own land, about 20 acres. The father built a barn by hand for the horses. (It's a pretty nice barn, too.) It took them many years and countless sacrifices to accumulate the "wealth" that they have. But some of the people in this thread go on the assumption that they must be "rich" because they have horses. Shot in the dark: their household income is less than $25,000 annually. They would be devastated to lose a possession like one of their horses, or their barn.

Where do you live? Yeah a lot of people who horseback ride are more wealthy and "sophisticated," but a lot of other horse fans are good people.

Moral: you can't generalize.
