First blush reaction aside, after reading some articles on this, I like this idea. For reference:
http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/11/us/boy-scouts-will-allow-girls-to-join/index.html
1. It sounds like only Cub Scouts will be dual-gender. The older groups will be separate, but girls will still be allowed to get an Eagle Scout award. So they're not just throwing the girls in with the boys.
2. An Eagle Scout award is great resume fodder. It shows that you can finish things. I don't know what the girl scout equivalent is, but I'm guessing there's a lot of bias towards "top cookie seller" vs. Eagle Scout, so that would be a nice feather in your hat when applying to colleges or jobs.
3. My wife was not into standard feminine stuff growing up - didn't like knitting or baking or stuff like that, wanted to do archery & go on the ATV's & stuff. Polar opposite of what the girls scouts typically do, afaik. So this sounds like it would be a pretty good way for girls who aren't into traditional girly stuff to have fun.
4. CNN's article makes a good point - there are a lot of households where both parents work and there are a lot of single-parent households. Being able to send your daughter or both your girls & boys into a single program would be really convenient.
5. No doubt they are trying to raise their numbers. Inside is a lot more fun than outside these days, with cheap big screen TV's, tablets, VR systems, the Internet, etc.
6. I was not outdoorsy as a kid & honestly wasn't always super thrilled to be in Boy Scouts, but it gave me a lot of good experiences. We're so PC & "no homo" these days that not a lot of male bonding goes on like it did in generations past. Outside of the military, I'm not even sure if there are any organizations other than maybe street gangs where boys get to bond. Or get to do stuff like go camping in the snow or canoeing for a week or stuff like that. So offering a program for girls to bond with other girls & get to do actual fun stuff that maybe their family doesn't normally do like fish or camp or hike would be pretty cool.
I think a big problem is the lack of good implementation at the local level...from what I've seen, a lot of troops are kinda lax. When we would switch leaders, sometimes we'd just end up playing basketball or whatever every week for like, months, instead of doing anything related to scouts.
