Just upgraded from an ATHLON 1600+ to a 2500+ Barton

MSI K8N2 motherboard

GeForce Ti4200 graphics card

All I did was change the CPU.

Heatsink is in, fan on, everything seems to run fine.

It makes the sounds that it usually does when I start the computer up.

The only problem is that the monitor won't show anything. It doesnt seem to know that the computer has been turned on.

I don't think its my graphics card, cause I tried it in a dif comptuer and it worked fine.

I may have hit my motherboard once with my screw driver when trying to get the heat sink fastened.

Could an invisible scratch on the motherboard cause this?

Is there anything else it could be?

Thanks for any help.

first check all power cables then reset the cmos that may do it
also make double sure that you got the hsf on correctly

How do I reset my CMOS?

I bought a retail processor, so the thermal paste is already on the heatsink where it touches the processor. And the CPU fan is permanently attached to the heatsink.

CPU fan was working perfectly.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Also check your front side bus speed. It may have to be reset due to the higher fsb speed of your Barton. Not sure about MSI boards, but my Soltek has a jumper that has to be set depending on fsb speed of CPU. Judging by the jump to a Barton you may have to move a jumper, check your mobo manual.

The 2500+ uses a higher bus speed than the 1600+. This may be forcing your RAM to run overclocked. If the RAM doesn't feel like running OC'ed, then that would jive with the symptoms you're seeing. For a 2500+, you want at least PC2700 memory modules, aka DDR333.

It could also be a power-supply issue. Or it could be backwards-heatsink syndrome, check my photo guide for how to tell.

I will try testing the ram and setting my FSB jumper. Resetting the CMOS didnt help.

The only thing is, when I put my old 1600+ back in, my computer still did not work.

Is it possible that I damaged my ram when trying my barton, so now neither will boot?

My heatsink was on the right way. I almost messed that up but caught myself last second.

At this point, what I want to know is, is there anything that COULD be wrong other than the motherboard or the ram?

Again, I know its not my graphics card.

Thanks

If your old processor isnt working, then most likely you did damage something. Iys unlikely your ram was damaged.

"I may have hit my motherboard once with my screw driver when trying to get the heat sink fastened."

If you killed a trace, then that would definitely be the prime suspect.

Once I get home from work, I will try taking the motherboard out and testing it with just minimal stuff.. ie motherboard, memory, video card, processor

If that doesn't work, I will go to a microcenter or another computer store nearby and get another motherboard and some more ram to test out whether it is my motherboard or my ram that is damaged.

Is there anything else I should get to test?

Get a Shuttle AN35N Ultra if you're getting a new board. Cheap, stable and well-behaved, plus I have the manual to it. If you want a more deluxe board, an Abit NF7-S would be nice. And if your RAM is not PC2700 or higher, that is what you will need for the 2500+. I'd recommend Crucial, Kingston or Corsair if you have one of those options.

Also, if your power supply isn't a good-quality one in the 350W area, and especially if it doesn't have an ATX12V plug, get a new PSU also, maybe an Antec SmartPower SL350 or higher. The Shuttle will need an ATX12V plug, as do more and more motherboards nowdays.

Thanks for the suggestions Mech.

I will be buying items for local stores, since it will be much easier to return things, and I have a big lan to go to tomorrow, but I will be looking for those items.

I think my ram is pc2700, but I will check when I get home.

I believe I have a 400W power supply, and just by looking at the picture of the plug, I am 99% certain I have that.

Thanks so much everyone.

Wish me luck.
