Just installed Win7 64 Pro on my SSD: no client mail?

Coming from Vista I thought Win7 would have a mail client like Microsoft Windows Mail. I have all my mail backed up and ready to migrate to Win7. Is this not going to be possible now?

Download Windows Live Mail, or if you have access to a Vista machine there are procedures online for copying Windows Mail over to W7.

If you register, I think you get something called Windows Live Mail, which is supposed to be the replacement for Windows Mail. Not sure about importing messages and that stuff. The main reason most people get Live is the Windows Live Essential virus protection. Registering to get Live is also the only way to get Windows Movie Maker and Photo Gallery. So you might as well do it.

I personally use Office 2003 Outlook for my main email. Incredimail is a free email client that I think can import messages from Windows Mail. This program is a little annoying on the cutesy side, but it does work. I use it basically as a storage place for all my old Windows Mail messages, only occasionally using it to send current email.

I don't think Live Mail requires a Yahoo account. Most people use it with MS email systems like Hotmail and Live.

To import messages, the first thing you need to turn on is the menu bar, which I think is hidden by default in Live Mail. It is the icon next to the help icon. Click on this and choose to show the menu bar. Now you can see the File/Import menu. You can probably just choose Windows Mail and point it to your directory where you backed up your files.

This is one of those emails programs that pretends it is web based, but it really is a hybrid. I think you can get it to look very similar to Windows Mail.

So it absolutely is not syncing any emails from my local PC to the web part of it? I don't think I fully understand how it works yet so please fill me in - sorry for the ignorance.

Some more details.

Windows Live Mail is a successor to the Windows Mail from Vista. It is a part of the Windows Live Essentials package, which include Live Main, Live Messenger, Live Photo Gallery and other that I cant remember.

WLM will allow import of email directly from Outlook Express or Windows Mail or previous versions of WLM.

the supposed reason that Win7 has no mail client is because being part of Windows Live Essentials they can update more frequently.

and as Lepard pointed out, it does not require any additional accounts as you can use it with standard POP accounts or with online accounts like hotmail, yahoo, gmail

No Yahoo account is needed. Just click the download button and download the installer.

Windows Live Mail is nothing more than a standard e-mail client. Don't let the "live" in the name confuse you. I have this mail client set up for my dad to download his ISP's POP account. You can configure it to work with any POP3, IMAP or HTTP based mail service. It's just a replacement for older free mail apps like Outlook Express and Windows Mail.

I recommend checking out Windows Live Photo Gallery too. It's a great photo application.
