Have been doing a little Seti@Home occasionally so I figured I would join the TA community! I don't have the fastest machines but its better than nothing!

Computer 1: Pentium 4 1.8Ghz- primary, Home server/SETI@Home

Computer 2: Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz, 2GB, 256MB Go 7300- My laptop, occasional SETI@Home

Computer 3: i7 860, 4GB, 1GB 5870- My main rig, actually being shipped to me right now. Occasional SETI@Home

Computer 1 will be up and running all the time. It is an old computer from work but I figure its processor is better than nothing! Anyone have any recommendations on what else to do with it? I guess maybe the best way to utilize it as a server as far as how to set it up, what to use it for etc.?

Welcome to the TeAm, iufan4lifeul! Any processing power you have is appreciated.

One way of improving the output for seti@home is to use an optimized seti-application which you can find here. Please read the info carefully and choose the correct app, depending which OS you have and what your processor is capable of (SSE I think, but check please with e.g. CPU-z). You will probably increase your production by 10 - 50%, depending on CPU-capabilities and OS.
To be honest, I do not think that your computer1 is worth upgrading. You'll need too much new hardware to increase capacity and it is very hard to find pentium processors which are higher clocked. I would propose that you optimise software or that you run the DPAD-project, which is very good at using older software and where all action is appreciated since we are the #1 team in the world.

Anyhow, please feel welcome to the TeAm!

Welcome to the TeAm, iufan4lifeul

When you asked 'Anyone have any recommendations on what else to do with it?', did you mean a DC project or hardware?

Well as far as what I should be running on it, if there were any dirt cheap upgrades I could snatch off ebay (doesn't seem to be) etc.

Thanks for the welcome!

Well if its S423 then you're pretty much stuffed, Intel gave that socket a very short life , maybe you could overclock it? That's free!
Is it S423 or 478?

As far as DC goes, as Petrus says you could run DPAD on it, P4s aren't particularly good at DPAD but it would still do useful work. It maybe better off staying on SETI though, upto you. Have you looked to see if their's an optimised SETI app for P4s?

Alright, I will look into any optimized SETI apps. I am really just getting into this whole DC'ing/home server stuff. I just switched majors to Computer Science so I am very interested in these topics. Is there any place I could read about or anyone I could talk to as far as best ways of setting up cheap home servers/DC machines?

Yea we got quite a few nuts... err I mean enthusiasts , who've built up quite some DC farms .

Probably you're best bet to grab there attention is to post a new thread with a title like 'advice wanted on DC farm building'. The big guns are in various projects but I'm sure they'll be willing to help .

Btw for the SETI opptimised apps see here http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index.php

Thanks for the welcomes, quick question. I joined team Anandtech but I am not sure if I joined it for just 1 project or the entire BOINC account. I had been doing SETI@home and it says team anandtech under team name but I just joined Rosetta and Milkyway and both are blank under team name. Do I have to do anything else to join for both of those projects?

ifan4lifeul, welcome from me too!

Yes you will need to add Team Anandtech for every project using that project's website. If you are logged in then search for anandtech and go the the Team Anandtech page and click "Join this team".

I just joined Rosetta and Milkyway too!

Alright, just joined Milkyway, but Rosetta doesn't have an option to join the team. Any suggestions?

nah.. the server might have been down at the time and so it didn't give the option... oh.. and for seti@home... they go down every tuesday for backups and such... and if you were lucky, it was only tuesday. when seti was my main project, it drove me nuts on tuesdays.
