Just moved to Seattle

Moved here to Seattle last week from CA. Beatiful weather, even by Northern California standards. No friends or family here, so if someone can suggest some things to do or check out, that would be great. I'm a photography buff, so places to take some pictures would be cool too.

Seattle is a major metropolitan area, no? Go to a few shopping centers, drive around a bit and familiarize yourself with the city, or look up a few scenic trails if they have any. I'm planning on moving to Seattle soon as well, tell me how it's like!

Oh, check out the space needle if you'd like.

Don't get used to the weather. This is some of the strangest weather ever in the NW. Sci-fi museum, music project, kids museum (if you have them). The market, of course. Depending on what kind of things you like to take pictures of you could look for it...there's a lot of older great architecture, amazing natural scenery, great people, etc. The olypmic penninsula is some of the best hiking there is. Head to mountains if you're into that. Start wandering the streets, and head into local restaurants and microbrew bars (there are a TON of them). Though grunge is gone seattle still has a great music scene.

Give me an idea of what you're into and I'll give you some specific locations.

If you have time, head down to PDX. I really like Seattle but I have a great love for Portland. Plenty to do and see and the people are more friendly than in Seattle, in my opinion. Or you could drive up north to Bellingham. I think we have whale watching tours here, not sure. Plenty of hiking, fishing, camping, and Mt. Baker has plenty of scenery to fill up your memory card. During the weekend, there's a lot of activities going on in Fairhaven and downtown.

I have no kids. I don't like nature hiking very much, but I do like walking through the city, just as I used to like walking through most of downtown San Francisco. Looking for architecture and street scenes to take pictures of. I've previously been to the Space Needle and Alki Beach (?). Museums would be nice.

I'm current living in Redmond (you can guess my day job).

Hit the library...it's rather...unique. Check out the Experience Music Project. Freeway Park is somewhat interesting architecture. The Museum of Flight is ok, though I prefer the Evergreen for aero stuff. Pike Place, of course. Woodland Park Zoo, if you're into zoos. Head over to Fremont for a fun, if step heavy, area of the city. If you want to see older areas of the metroplex (and architecture) you can go up to Everett, or over to Bremerton (also get some Navy stuff there). There's always the underground (though I think it's overrated). There are a ton of museums, especially art museums (though I prefer the Sci-Fi museum, being a bit of a geek). If you're unbearably yuppy you can check out the first Starbucks.

That should keep you for a while.

Thanks for the list.

Which library are you referring to? The one on 4th Ave? What's unique about it?

Lake Union is cool, from the Ballard Locks all the way to the cut and lake Washington. Tons of parks, interesting industry, good views of the city.
A little farther north, you have Green Lake and the zoo.

Yeah, the central on 4th. Mostly the architecture. I'm big on architecture (in case you couldn't tell). It's completely bizarre. It's also a fairly nice library in general.

Seattle has the best summers in the country... but summer only lasts about 2 months, then there's 10 months of constant drizzle and dreary skies.
It's also perhaps the most beautiful state (in the 48). Go visit Mt. Rainier and it may change your perspective on hiking. The Sunrise area of the park is very nice right now.

The library is fun to check out, but do go to Pike Place Market. I haven't been there in a long time but I remember it was so fun. Especially the fish people.

There's Bite of Seattle this weekend. Seafair is coming up in the next couple weeks and I hear that's pretty fun (no idea why I haven't been yet).

What do you like to take pictures of? If you're into nature, you kind of have to get out of the city to check that out.

Only a 3 hour drive to Vancouver, BC! It's like Seattle North.
