Just need Stable Router

While old PCs make good routers with something like pfsense they also use loads of power, and over a year this adds up.

I'd have to disagree on torrents. There great for rapid distribution of large files. Some Linux builds have long been using torrents as a means of distribution.

Remember, all I need is wired, no wireless.

I like the distance you can get with the asus. (RT-N66u).
Better than my cicso was even better now with the latest firmware.

I personally would not by the Cisco E4x00 routers. Mine worked fine for about 6 months, then it locked up and needed to be repowered. Nothing has changed, no setting changes, no new devices. In the last week it has degraded even more and now it totally locks up at least once per day until I repower it. Routers that are unreliable are not worth wasting more time on them. When I bought it I updated the E4200v1 to 1.03 firmware, now there is a 1.04 now but it doesn't mention fixing this in the changes. I rarely return stuff, but this thing was too expensive to just eat, plus it is still under warranty, got it at Costco so I might be able to return it there too.

The E4200 has a USB port but my drive has never worked on the E4200, although it works on every other PC. Cisco efforts to fix problems with this router in general are poor. Spend some time and look at Cisco forums, this is the latest firmware thread.

My WRT54G, which I still have, ran for many years without any problems or really needed to be restarted. If it were faster, I'd go back to using it.

Forgot, my router sits directly under an A/C duct so it never even gets warm either. Overheating is not an issue. Nothing else on the shelf has had a problem (HP switch, HDHomerun, etc).

There are Millions of users that are on the Internet using Westel Modem/Routers (Wire & Wireless).

I have few friends that do. They are individuals that contribute to Medical and scientific advances that are far important to human mankind than any body else that I know (One can Not be "stupid" when they are few steps away from a Nobel price).

How come? Because they do not waste their life on the Internet on Killing Gaming and stealing through Torrenting. Thus any Wireless Router that provide regular Internet services is Good.

I (being an Enthusiasts) will not take a Westel Modem/Router for free.

In other words, if one is an Enthusiasts that is way of using the hardware brink the Device to its "knees" Spend few hundreds $$ and get a pro Device.

It is rather silly to keep Crying over boxes of plastic with a little copper and silicone inside that cost around $100 (the price of one good meal for two in an upscale restaurant).

So if one is aware of it and want to pay low its OK, just under that these inexpensive thingies will not last for years, and will not cover your home from the basement to the second floor.

I had an issue with my Netgear R6300 until I changed my 5 g band to a different chanel. Now 100% signal and steady. Love this router

The "Router" and "Steady" has Nothing to do with the quality of your Wireless.

You have better Wireless on the current channel because the Signal to noise ratio (SNR) in the surrounding physical environment is better at the that specific channel.

I dont understand what your point is I may be missing something...
I fixed the one issue I was having with my R6300 and now it is fast with a strong single and steady on 5g.
