Fan rattle is the devil, and the 580 is a great solution in that department.

While I still think it's a huge waste of money from a performance standpoint (especially with 6950s being BIOS unlockable to 6970s, at that resolution you could have near identical or sometimes better performance for $600...damn, the 580s are horrible values), in the month I had my 580 it was really fantastically quiet even at 100% load.

Right now if you want massive power and cool/quiet, those 580s are absolutely number one. And at that price premium, you better enjoy the hell outta them.

Well thats just the problem. I needed a double card solution and I've had nothing but problems with crossfire, otherwise I would have stuck with my 5970 and just get the fan fixed or go with water cooling.

She's much different, she's really only half Persian and she was raised here in America. She works hard (3 jobs), double major (actuarial science and insurance), and maintains a 3.8GPA. If I seem braggy its because I couldn't have done any better and I'm really proud that I finally found the right one

She drives a camary, and when we graduate in May she wants to get a new Ford Explorer.

I might as well finish bragging

Crucial C300 256gb SSD
4x1tb Raid 0 Samsung F3's

Okay I'm done bragging now.

What exactly is that monitor setup (I do realize youve got two in portrait mode)?

Did eyefinity support such a setup? I still dont understand how eyefinity works at all, but if I could get a setup like that to switch back and forth as a large single surface...

Alright, you convinced me. I just purchased a Corsair 1200AX and I'm having it shipped overnight so I can play with everything tomorrow (Amazon Prime FTW)

Wasn't sure if i should go with the 1000w or the 1200w but I made the mistake last summer not buying enough so I'm not gonna make that mistake this time.

You made the right choice. I have a Corsair HX1000 and its been great but the 1200 has one large rail, whereas the 1000w is actually 2 500w PSU's fused together on the inside so it takes a little more thought when wiring up. It also has an extra CPU power connector hardwired (along with board power and two pciE) whereas the 1200 is full modular. the 1000w is a few years old now and the 1200 is much newer design.

so i think you made the right choice not only for the reasons above, but to give yourself more headroom for any future upgrades.

Here I was thinking about how great of a decision it was to go with a 460 1gb. I can max out almost any game I play.....then I was thinking, if I decided to pay double/triple the money and go with 6950/6970 or 570/580 would the money difference be really worth better frame rates?

Visually, there wouldn't be any difference......frame rates are fine with 460......

SO much money for such little gain. I guess if money is no object....

he's playing on 2560 x 1600..... a 1gb 460 isn't going to be able to max things out and be playable at that rez

Dell U3011 and (2) Dell 2007FP (not WFP)

The 20 inchers are 1600x1200 resolution. So when you put them in portrait mode they match the U3011's vertical resolution perfectly. As of right now eyefinity is not supported in PLP.

Honestly, gaming on just the 30 inch is great. I love the 20 inch monitor's for webpages, they are pretty much the perfect size for surfing the internet.

+1

My 5850@1000/1200 choked big time in certain games at 2560x1600 and it's faster than a 1GB 460.

3 jobs, drives a camary, 3.8 gpa. Low affinity for BMWs and Benz. hey nice girl!
lol when I was in dental school i knew a couple persian girls, and boy they were living high, way beyond their means, and it scared the hell outta me seeing how the sweet princesses were cashing out daddy's plastic like it was nothing. I was living in a $1200/mo apartment, they were living in a $3400/mo apartment. I know a for sure dentist's salary (over 100k/yr) would no way in hell be able to support such lifestyles!

Yeah if anybody has issues with money its me

I got my stuff today. Ran into a few unexpected things. This is my first SLI setup and i was unaware that you could not run three monitors in SLI mode. Thankfully i had a 7600GT and a 8800GT laying around as a third card and that fixed the issue. I ended up using the 7600GT but was wondering if i should put int he 8800 GT for physx?

2nd issue is just an annoyance. Corsair needs to make a longer CPU power cable on their power supplies. I had to murder my fingers getting that thing attached. If your wondering I have an Obsidian 300D case, which is also made by corsair.

What are you talking about? You sure can run 3 displays with SLI'd GTX 580's; it is called "Surround" and it competes with Eyefinity. You can even do 3D Vision Surround with the right 120 Hz LCDs

Congrats on the GTX 580s. i just got my second one from Nvidia today also! i get to compare it with my HD 6970 CrossFire at for an upcoming evaluation. And with CF'd 6970s, i got 35 FPS average, very high, 2xAA/16xAF at 2560x1600 in Crysis last night!
:awe:

You can try add a 8800GT for PhysX, but it may not be necessary as GTX 580 SLI is already a pretty powerful solution without it. You would probably want to test with Cryostasis and Mafia II; both have demos.

I'm not wanting to run surround. My flanking displays are in portrait mode.

What about for gaming? i mix and match for productivity but i prefer Surround or Eyefinity for especially racing games.

You cant do eyefinity or surround with portrait displays if you have one in landscape.

Actually you can; in productivity mode for eyefinity

That is why i asked you about gaming. i get it; you don't "do Surround"
^_^ ... too bad

Everything I've seen so far is you cant do it unless you have "hacks"

I would probably do it for some games if i could, but I dont want to run in windowed mode. I tried in eyefinity a few times and it wouldnt let me.

It works fine with P+L+P only for productivity; not for gaming.

When i game, i *either* game on my HP LP 3065 or on 3 displays currently.
- eventually, i would like to run 3 x 2560x1600 or else 3 x 1920x1080 (at 120 Hz for 3D Surround).

I thought about the three 30 inch monitors and decided against it. I was using 3 40 inch HDTV's for awhile in eyefinity. It was just too much, i had to literally turn my head all the time. Although 30 is smaller, I dont think i'd like it too much. Not to mention you'd have to do something crazy like quad SLI

I do play some Iracing, but other than that I dont really race.

I can probably do a window mode hack for iracing, might look into it.

Well so far I'm very happy with my choice. The 580's give me that few more fps compared to the 570's which makes a big difference in the long run. I never dip below 50fps in BC2 with all the settings turned up. I have them overclocked to 850 on the core without voltmodding. Will probably go higher later.

Crysis runs like a dog, wondering if there's an issue somewhere else.

What resolution and settings are you running crysis at? Keep in mind that even with gamer settings and enthusiast shaders, anandtech's review shows the gtx580 getting 69 fps at 2560x1600 in Crysis Warhead - which is more slightly optimized than Crysis.

Yeah I was getting about 10fps. Obviously something isn't right. I don't really play crysis, i was just doing a little testing. Probably wont bother to even look at what the issue is. It plays all my games perfectly.

Battlefield 2 at 500FPS!!!!! ZOMG
