I just picked up Mario Kart from the Ebgames in Westwood. I am here to explain the bliss that is mario kart.
Everyone that loves mario kart of any form: GET THIS GAME
Everyone that loves kart racers: GET THIS GAME
Everyone that loves multiplayer games: GET THIS GAME
Everyone that loves games with that pure nintendo quality: GET THIS GAME

Actually, lets put it this way:
Anyone that remotely shares an interest in video games: GET THIS GAME

If you do not have a gamecube by now, there is no reason not to. With the recent price drop and the already spectacular line-up that Nintendo has established up until now, everyone should at least pickup a used gamecube. (which goes for what? a measely $69? probably comes with a used game as well) I just spent the last 5 hours playing this game nonstop with 2 of my friends. We have never had this much fun with a game before... So much has changed with this franchise that I honestly cannot believe the reviewers at IGN and gamespot gave this masterpiece a 7.9. I seriously think they were just playing this game to look for excuses and to bash it rather than to have any fun with it at all (hey, its their loss anyways). Sure, the game could have offered "more," but what game can you truly not say the same for? I also know that regardless of their reviews, people will buy this game and it will easily be a million seller. However, I just fear that so many people that trust IGN and gamespot will lose out on such a gaming experience because of the lackluster score. Nintendo is trying to make things right again, and they will need all the help they can get as they approach the next generation of consoles. At its heart, Mario Kart: DD is definitely a multiplayer game, and that is how people will be playing it as anyways. As more and more people start to get this game, I would like to hear your thoughts on the game as well.

Wow, was shocked to see the review scores that you just noted.

EGM gave is a 10, 10, and 9.5.

Looks like the biggest complaint is that theres not much new to it. I tried out the demo and I think thats fairly true but strategy/skill is much much more important now.

I preordered and going to pick up tommorow.

picked it up today too, and I think the game's a lot of fun. The battle stages are a bit small, but the two new modes are fun.

my only complaint is that Nintendo didn't add anything too new or more creative to the gameplay. The whole two-person to a cart doesn't really appeal to me... nor does it really make the game that much better.

can this game be played online? I'm thinking about picking up the Broadband adapter and the Linksys Wireless Game Adapter if it is.

No, doesn't play online.

Also, IIRC, Nintendo pulled the broadband unit from shelves.

I don't own a GameCube.. and I'd rather buy a Gameboy Advance SP so I can play those Final Fantasy games.. otherwise I'd be playing this today/tomorrow as I loved the older ones.

I think the broadband adapter is available at ebgames as well. The warppipe project is coming along quite nicely and will be VERY promising. The only thing wrong with mario kart though has to be that you cannot choose your characters when you play over lan =(. EXTREMELY STUPID decision by nintendo. But other than that, I LOVE the dual players per kart. It simply makes Mario Kart THAT much better because you don't have to leave it ENTIRELY up to chance with the item selection. You can save the good items and ensure your victory if you're in first rather than to lose it at the last moment because of 50 banana peels while your opponents get 50 lightnings.

what do you mean you can't choose your own characters over LAN?

Are you automatically assigned a character? No two people can be the same char? Confused is I.

I like the mario kart franchise but I can definitely see why gamespot gave it a 7.9. I've played through the first 12 courses and only 2 or so were even remotely interesting. Almost every single one is too short. None of them are very interesting except those 2 or so. I'm pretty disappointed with the courses.

But, I can sort of (not really) also see how it would get a 10, because the gameplay is good, and the presentation is pretty good. Being able to unlock stuff is interesting, and the 2 people on the kart does add some level of strategy.

I'd give it an 8.5 or so if I were a reviewer, maybe less. I should play it a lot more to say for sure. The courses really are pretty sub-par for a mario kart game. They remind me of some of the smaller diddy kong racing courses, except in DKR there were a lot more courses and even the short ones were WAYYYY more interesting / creative.

Basically my mental narration was "This is fun. This course kind of sucks. I hope the next one is better. This course looks interesting in the fly by. Nope it kind of sucks too. Hope the next one is better. I guess I'm having fun, sort of. I wish the courses were better" etc.

Even in thinking about the game during this post I've decided to downgrade my score to 8.2. But, maybe it will make sense as I play it more. Perhaps the courses are lame and pathetic in order to increase the value of racing skills. But probably not.
