1. maybe Im being a little paranoid about emi but I just thought I would make sure my sound card being only about an inch above the psu is okay. its the only pci slot I have besides the one that would be right up against my video card. http://img11.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000544.jpg

2. in the audio control panel I have enabled x-fi cmss-3d. right next to is a slider that says front at the top and surround at the bottom. that slider is greyed out for me so is something wrong? I am using headphones plugged in the rear with no other speakers if that matters.

3. every time I resume my pc from sleep I get the following error so what can I do?

1. It should be ok, I dont think the emi from the psu is that major if at all (correct me if im wrong). I would be more scared of it up against the video card and possibly overheating.

2. I think you have to be using speakers to have that slider not greyed out

3. Are you using the latest drivers from the creative site? If so, maybe an older version might help and vice versa

Don't use sleep mode. I know this sounds patronizing but just don't use it.
Creative drivers are notorious for being bloated and buggy.

Oh, and keep the X-Fi in the slot furthest away from your video card.

sorry but I have to use sleep mode. the card functions fine and all I have to do is close out the error but it is annoying.

1. okay. I had read that it was bad but the video card could be just as bad plus it would be right up against it.
2. yeah I figured it was just because I was using the headphone
3. yes I have the newest drivers from the site. I hate to go back to older drivers because I could end up with more probs.

Exactly WHY are you forced to use the sleep mode?

well I am not turning the computer off every time I am going to be away from it for a while. I may get on the computer several times through out the day and rebooting and turning off would be silly. the sleep function is there for a reason and I am using it like intended.

Since you are non-receptive to any advice I have to offer... mission accomplished.

what advice? you asked me to stop using sleep mode which is NOT an option. you then said my memory wasnt on the Gigabyte's QVL list which I told you is not a prob. if you actually look at that list it says Memory modules listed below are for reference only. Due to massive memory models on the market, we can only verify some of them. when I got my memory there were a few others that had the same board and reported no probs. the memory is just fine like I told you.

are you asking me to use hibernation or if the problem still exists coming from hibernation? I havent used hibernation in a long time and I much prefer using sleep. I am off and on the pc at random times and sleep is just much more convenient.

I don't even bother to turn my computer off. it just runs 100% of the time.

but then again my home system is a 10" netbook hooked up to a 22" samsung monitor with two PSB alpha bookshelves and a NAD 3020 amplifier & technics preamp. The whole thing is so completely unbalanced that maybe you should take my advice with a grain of salt.

just out of curiosity what significance does the QVL list have? I've never actually looked at one before.

well I never turn my pc completely off unless I will be gone for 24 hours. other than that I just put it to sleep. of course sometimes it stays on for hours.

I am not really sure what the significance of that chart is. I guess they just test the most popular memory for compatibility to make sure they dont have any widespread issues. I checked reviews to make sure at least a few people were using my memory on the same board just to be safe.

1. Don't worry about EMI unless it's an issue. I had a board that had some EMI and getting my x-fi soundcard fixed it.

2. I think it does matter. That slider should be available in all modes. Try plugging the headphones into the very bottom plug of the card. (closest to the mobo). You definitely want cm-sss 3d with headphones, since that is what it is really made for. I thought it would be gimmicky trash but it actually mimics surround sound with just headphones amazingly well.

3. Your not the only one:

after a long fight with my nvidia board xfx 780i not going into sleep mode and constant freezing, was i lucky enough to avoid the fsb hole and various voltage issues and now i can finally put my comp into sleep mode! yay
but whenever it wakes up from the sleep mode it would give me this message.

Feel better? Cause that's all i got! I think your gonna have to wait until MS or Creative creates an update. They do have a beta driver for Windows 7, but I bet u already tried that.

well thanks for the replies.

1. well I think we are talking about slightly different things here. yeah I definitely have some interference with my my front panel even when running off the sound card. obviously its due to poor shielding in the Antec cases front panel which is ridiculous because I have never had that prob with cheap computers before. I just want to make sure that having the soundcard that close to the psu is not a risk for getting emi straight to the card.

2. choosing 5.1 lets me move the slider so its just that having 2.0/2.1 or headphones selected that doesnt let you move it. I guess I should have checked that earlier but it is indeed working correctly for my setup.

3. well for now when coming out of standby I guess I will just close the error message and not worry about. I did download the drivers for Windows 7 but I havent fooled with installing them yet since I hardly ever use 7. yeah its amazing how so many seemingly unrelated things can cause driver issues.

lol emi...
it wouldn't be so consistent if it were.

do your speakesr actually justify buying this soundcard?
you are probably causing yourself a headache for no reason.

Im using fairly cheap Sony headphones and even so the difference has been huge. I was trying out some 5.1 speakers but I decided not to torture my friend that I share a house with. I will be getting some better quality headphones soon though.

what does my memory have to do with anything? I am just asking if having the soundcard that close the psu could cause any probs.
