I use Kingsford charcoal because it's cheap and readily available. $10 for two 20lb bags at Home Depot, Lowes, or Walmart during the Memorial, 4th July, and Labor day sales. Can't beat that.
I used to, trust me, if you can get the other in your area, give it a shot.

Things taste smoked just cooking like normal.

Just suggesting, I have an Aunt up near Ocala who is a food maniac as far as prepping for company and the way she does things, we told her about it and she loves it too, and only uses it now.

I don't use Lump charcoal in a smoker - it burns too hot. They are great for the charcoal grill though.

It's more consistent heat than Lump charcoal too, which is essential on a smoker.

My Weber Genesis S-330 will easily hit 650-700 F in less than 10 minutes if I turn on all 3 burners plus the sear station burner. It's not even a contest between gas and charcoal when it comes to speed. I also own Weber One-Touch Gold 22.5" charcoal grill and Weber 18.5" Smokey Mountain charcoal smoker so it's not like I don't have experience with Weber charcoal grills.

Not even a contest?

I can get my kamado to 700f molten lump in 10 minutes after walking out the door. This is with 3 firestarters and a small fan. No charcoal chimney or anything.

This guy gets his to 750f in 5 minutes, start to finish.

Edit:

:shrug; reviews are still saying these things have preheat times of above 20 minutes:

Meh, depends on the smoker.

If you have something with leaks and not very good intake vent control then you have to use briquettes.

If you have something with good vent control lump is far better. It lasts longer, has less ash, and imparts better flavor without having to use wood chunks.

Was wantng to find a better grill than a weber but that looks difficult to do. Getting SB-330 for unde a grand.

I must have stainless grates. I'll never do the porcelain cast iron ever again.

Please time how long it takes to get to 700f from cold. :awe:

Over 500 in 5 minutes and a hair over 650 in 10...bet it could have done 700 but the wife wanted me to start cooking:/

I've got pics of the temp gauge I'll post when I have time

I must be the only one that isn't happy with their weber grill here. Got a Genesis e320 and the left side of the grill doesn't get hot at all. It started off a little cooler than the right side, but over time its so much cooler that its pretty much useless. I'll have to take it apart this summer and check it out to see if the burners are messed up.

You must've gotten a good one! These other reviewers with the same 12,600 btu burners are taking 20+ minutes.

He's going to want laser infrared thermometer of the cooking surface. Should be hotter down there. The thermos on the lid are notoriously inaccurate.

You might want to clean out your venturi tubes. :hmm:

WTF are venturi tubes?

I have a weber performer gold and a big green egg so I'm a little naive to all this gasser BS.

Why would you use a gasser if you have to clean it out?

I just finished up some salmon on the weber. Took 15 min 30 sec to get to 500f using a chimney. I added some pecan wood and made corn (indirect) along with salmon seasoned with dizzy pig raging river. Yum.

Can you gassers use smoke woods without a little packet or whatever? Why not just fry it?

I've settled on the EP-330. The big difference is the stainless steel grates and flavorizers which should last a very long time.

I checked out the S-330 at lowes which does have stainless grates (a must have for me) but I couldn't tell if the flavorizers were stainless or not.

Grilling on gas was invented by european men so their ladies can cook while their husband's play soccer.
He he I like that, even though I grew up with a natural gas grill hard piped into it right outside the backdoor in the 70's.

You should clean any cooking equipment a couple times a year.

Spiders can block venturi tubes.

LOL, you truly are a moron
