Just ran SMART on my server drives....

I just put together another WHS. After my failed homebuild I just used a couple external enclosures. I picked up and Acer WHS and migrated my data and drivers over. I installed a SMART plug-in and am curious just how bad the drives are.

Both are 1.5TB Seagates, yes the bad ones.





How bad is this? I have already planned to get one of the new high density Samsung's when they are released next month. Is it bad enough I need to move my plans up?

They could be perfectly fine.
It Might have just been a bad/loose cable, or the server got bumped into while trying to read something.
I had the same thing happen on my raptor and it's been running fine for a few years since without adding anymore smart errors.

I recommend checking the cables or replacing them if they have been around for awhile.
Then rerun the smart test and compare in another week.
If there are more errors, then that could be an indication of something more severe.

Those drives tend to just get bricked, not necessarily die slowly.

Probably fine, though keep backups as always.

Not true. I have 8 of them that slowly died on me. Thank goodness Seagate's RMA rocks for Texans.

How bad do they have to be to RMA? Is there a particular number of sectors that have to go bad or does it have to die completely?

If the drive is operational, I believe that the Seagate RMA system requires that it fails their own self-test software.

40 is a bad sign, 6 isn't too bad but for how new these drives are, you shouldn't have any.

The drive has to find a bad sector, and then go through the remapping process, and then update the SMART table.

The drive will do this on it's own without any kind of scan.

Yeah, Seagate changed their RMA policy a while back. They now require that you have a Seatools test failure OR you can state that your disk failed another disk diagnostics program. Only thing is, if Seagate determines that, in their tests, that the disk is functional, then they can deny the RMA and send yours back to you.

I'm GUESSING that if you pay the $20 for an advanced RMA, when you send your old disk back after getting the replacement, even if Seagate isn't positive the disk is "bad", they aren't going to send your old one back and demand that you return the replacement disk. Too much expense (for both them and the customer) and bad customer relations involved.
