Just got terminated this morning... They did it by phone (cowards). Told me I could pick my stuff up at the front gate. And when I sign some paperwork they will hand over my severance and vacation pay.

Question: What is the worst way that you have been fired? And, what did you do about it?

Hopefully your answers will make me laugh!

That's a pretty crappy way to get fired, you must have done something pretty bad to get that treatment.

I'd think being escorted out of the building by Security would be worse but that's the standard M.O. with a lot of companies.

I was escorted out by a manager at IBM after my internship was over... I guess that's similar to what RD said. They claimed it was normal, but I was pretty angry at the time, so... maybe they were worried about me breaking stuff.

Don't internships have finite time restrictions? Why were you so angry at the end of yours?

I'm going to hand in my 2 week notice in today as well. But I'll do it in person and not over the phone.

Management has no balls. It is a universal thing. They are afraid someone will snap and do something.
When they laid off my whole dept at my old job. They told 2 guys they weren't getting the ax. They told them this because they were big and they wanted them to escort everyone out of the building as they broke the news to small groups at a time. Then when it was done, on the last trip out the managers went outside and told those 2 dudes they were in the lay-off, and then ran back inside and locked the door.

I dunno if its the worst but...when i was working at the mall my managers boss called me and a cuple other employees in and told us we had to do this deal where we walked around the mall taking surverys on wether or not people wanted to expand the mall (which i was against cause they were goign to cut down forest to do so), well at the time i was a customer service guy, and me and the other people there had been expecting it and since i was going to quit soon anyways i stood up and said "Why in the heck do we have to do this, i mean its not our job to take surverys for you" and this just totally took her off guard, she was like "of course it is, you have to assist customer", so i said "yep assist, no annoy", so we ended up gettng out the booklet of my job responsibilities and of course it was NOWHERE in there. I said i'd do it anyways I'm just apposed to it. She said fine and just walked away...

Well as the day went on i got all these surverys done, there were 4 of us doing them, and after about 6 hrs this boss lady calls me in and says "I really dont think you fit the sort of person that i expected to work here", I said "fine but check out how each of us was doing"...well I was actually working my ass off and i had more surverys done then DOUBLE the rest of the guys taking them. So I just took off my work shirt (i had a wife beater on underneath), left it on the desk, and walked out and continued around the mall where met up with gf and security guard who was my buddy there and once he heard what happend he quit right then and there leaving them without a security guard on duty (it was a smaller mall, only one security on duty) on a saturday afternoon

Jumpr, my internship was not a fixed length and I was paid. I guess they call it a co-op instead of an internship. Either way, my previous manager (before the one that escorted me out) decided to ignore the fact that I was supposed to receive a raise whenever I got more credits under my belt. I brought it up to her, she told me otherwise... so I used their "open door" policy to talk to her boss. I got my raise, but was also let go because of it. Lesson Learned: Open Door policies may exist, but that doesnt stop people from being assholes.

I was a temp at this company. One day about two weeks before Christmas my direct supervisor invited me to have some "after work" beers at a local bar. This was not unusal because we had gone there before, talked about work, and looked at women.

He was about a half hour late getting to the bar. I had had a couple of beers and was busy checking out a two women on the other side of the bar when he arrived. He sat down, ordered a beer, and started talking about work. I was barely listening but he was saying how there was a head count reduction coming for the full time employees. And how the company terminates the temps first. Then he was saying how much everyone in the group liked me and what a major contribution I made and how he did not think they could have done everything without me.

This caught my attention and I asked him if they were going to lay me off. He said yes and they going to give me my two week notice the next day.

My last day was three days before Christmas, the same day as the group holiday party. During the meeting part of the party, my supervisor stood up and told the group about my contributions and how much I would be missed. Everyone applauded. Then we had dinner and later drinks. I was sitting at the bar and my supervisor's boss came over and told me that he got me a job in another group down the hall.

At around nine pm, I decided it was time to leave and realized that I needed to get my time sheet signed. I went to my supervisor who talking to his boss and his bosses' boss to get him to sign it. My supervisor wouldn't do. He said he wasn't going to sign my last time sheet three days before Christmas. His boss said the same thing. Finally the boss' boss's boss signed it. Then he pulled me aside and told me he got me job in another group where there was a good chance I could get hired full time.

I started working in the other group right after the holidays. Two months later the old group had a 25% head count reduction. Two months after the lay offs the new director of the old group offered me a full time position.

Cliff notes:
1. I had a temp job and was laid off a couple of days before Christmas
2. My boss got a me job in another group in the same building.
3. The old group had a 25% head count reduction.
4. Two months after the lay off I was offered a full time position.

Worked with a guy that just came from a lay-off in Detroit. He said that at lunch everybody was sent outside for something. They then locked the doors and dropped the paychecks from the roof. The roof. Ouch.

 It's nice to see some managers looking out for their people, and having the guts to say it to your face if things do look bad.
