If I pay off some of the negative charges would they be deleted from my report or would they still be listed?

If you pay off the creditors, you can tell them to change the outstanding to "closed" or "satisfied" or something like that. This way when someone checks out your credit report it will show as paid late but paid eventually.
But you have to tell them to do this. It wont just automatically happen.

Most likely it will be updated automatically. I've never had to call one to tell them to show an account as paid.
But, it *is* a good idea to review one's report regularly looking for mistakes.

While we are on the topic of credit reports, is there any way to actually recieve a free credit report?

Technically, it's only average or even slightly below.
Yes, though it depends on which credit agency you go with. Each have slightly different scoring methods and ranges. Equifax tops out at 850, while experian tops out at 900. However, it's almost impossible to get a top score because there are so many factors, some which are actually conflicting, so I've never read of anybody myself who had a perfect score. Once you're in the mid 700's, you'll start to see lenders drooling over your application for credit. Is there a "top" score?
