Okay, just got my glasses from CoastalContacts and the quality seems to be decent. Maybe a good pair of backup glasses/sunglasses.

The only 'weird' thing is that with these glasses I don't have much peripheral vision as with my last glasses that I got from my eye doctor. For example if I'm staring at my 20.1" monitor and look straight ahead and only move my eyes to the right or left the words become slightly blurry. With my other glasses this does not happen.

I think my index may be slightly higher (thinner?) with the new glasses I ordered than with my old ones... so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Old thread but the companies mentioned are still selling glasses online for low prrices.

I *LOVE* my glasses from Coastal Contacts (Clearly Contacts in Canada). They're the only pair of glasses I've routinely received compliments on. They were $15 including shipping during a special promo, what a deal.

They kick the shit out of any $300 Lenscrafters glasses I've ever owned.

They're easier to clean.
They don't scratch.
They fit me perfect.

Maybe my prescription is too high (-7 & -7.5) for the high index (.67 I think?) so that is why it blurs if I look anywhere but straight on?

It could be simply cut wrong. You local eye doctor should be happy to verify.

Are you wearing lenses made of polycarbonate? These lenses tend to produce a lot more chromatic abberation then glass or regular plastic lenses. As you look into the outer peripheral edges of your lenses they tend to be slightly blurry. It's best to turn your head to look at the subject head on.

So fill me in here... you guys go into an order on that site already knowing the frame you want? Because when I pick out new frames in person at a store, I take like 2 hours trying on about 192 pairs before deciding. I can't imagine just taking a chance on a random frame.

...somehow, I think you're in the minority taking that much time deciding. Takes me about half a dozen tries, and I end up with the same ones I had before.

You can go into a store and try some on, then find the same frames online in a lot of cases.

Ditto.

I mean, how the heck do you buy glasses without knowing what they look like on you. And, if you're buying something like Silhouettes, how the heck do you choose the shape of your lenses without looking at samples (if you can even do that)?

There's a page that shows the various lens shapes (on Zenni Optical's site, at least). You can take measurements of your current frames to get an idea of the sizing, and from there, it's just a matter of visualization. Or Photoshop if necessary.

If its correct straight ahead, but blurry, or fish eyed or warped at an angle, its because they cut corners and made the centers to spec only imo (in my experience.)

Also, Coastal Contacts has a virtual mirror where you can upload your picture or use a webcam and put the glasses on. Pretty cool.

Well back when I used to order, they used to send trial packs (without lenses) of 4 pairs of glasses at a time.

Now, they have unlimited returns/exchanges until you find a pair you like. They even pay for the return shipping.

Slightly off topic - Does anyone use monthly contacts? If so can you share what type you are using and any pros and cons?

looking at Coastal's web site right now, good prices. Anyone want to comment on the shipping? I broke my glasses, and while I can see. I'd like to be able to see better. Was wondering how long the process takes. Web site doesn't give any indication about how long it takes a person to get their glasses. I don't want to spend $300 at Lensecrafters, but I don't want to wait 3 weeks either.

I ordered some glasses from them on Saturday, they shipped them Monday and I got them today. Came with a nice Nike carrying case, a cleaning cloth and a little bag to store them on. Plus some mini tools to adjust the frames if they're too tight/loose. Got Nike frames, and paid $84.41 shipped, that's with upgraded lighter lenses with a supposed better coating. At Walmart, the cheapest pair I could have got would have run me about $130'ish, and the frames sucked. Anything close to this would have been $350'ish. I haven't wore glasses for years, my vision is bad but not so bad I can't see without em. I think the glasses are nice, I'm having a bit of trouble when things are close up (I have single vision) I'm not sure if the Doctor who examined me didn't do a good job, or the lenses are a bit off. I am very happy with the deal, and if they are wrong, Coastal will replace them free of charge no questions asked. Which is awesome. I will be ordering a 2nd pair soon, I'm very impressed, the only thing I wish they offered which they don't is transition lenses, oh well.

I just got my Calvin Klein frames and standard lenses...they look great, a little smaller than I expected (thought the glasses overall would have been wider, had to adjust a little bit). I had to do my own measuring of the center of my pupils, and it seemed to be spot on as my lenses work perfectly. Great cheap pair of around the house glasses. Going to be using my insurance to get me a nicer pair of office frames and lenses, and then maybe another cheap pair from WalMart for wearing outside. I have a fat head, so I need to try on my glasses first, to make sure they fit my fat head...

Well, I'm very impressed with their customer service. Bought some semi-rimless glasses which arrived in exactly a week. The temples were a little too thick for my liking, so I shot them an e-mail about returning them. One hour later, I get an e-mail from customer service with a prepaid return label.
