I just watched the movie AI, and I thought it was very, very good. I had read almost nothing about it, just seemed to remember that some people told me its reviews were so so. The funny thing is that the 20 minute tacked on ending was so obviously out of place and added by Spielberg, that I realized that was the case without having any background knowledge at all. I'd also guess a lot of the stuff at the flesh fair was Spielberg (the music video style for a lot of it, the blacklight motorcycle guys). Obviously most people probably thought the same thing, but even my little brother who is 12 was like, "what was with the last part of that? It was ouit of place." I still have no idea who had the most control over the movie, so maybe it was spielberg all the way, but I doubt it.
The last part was actually in Kubrick's original script and it seemed very much in place to me (it reminded me a lot of the ending in 2001: A Space Oddessy)
I loved the movie and its ending. The ending actually brought tears.

I had a hard time dealing with the little kid begging his mom not to get rid of him- that was really heart wrenching. Also, my take on the ending was that those weren't aliens, but evolved androids. They had outlived the human race and became the dominant species, which is ironic because they were always treated as inferior by humans.

I want to like AI, I really do, but.. I get an "Error: Credible Plot Missing" message when I try.

I'm pretty sure that's what was intended. I never even condsidered that they could be aliens.

Having an engineering degree, it is just too difficult for me to believe robot emotions and really get into that movie. They're robots, they're machines, the feelings are completely artifical.

Mercifully I passed out halfway through the movie. My friends were not so lucky. They wanted to gouge out their eyes with rusty plastic sporks and take a coat hanger through both ears to remove any brain matter that might have neural connections to any part or sound of that movie.
