Just scratched my processor core? Should I even install it?

I was trying to put somrthing together real quick cause my other computer went down and in the rush of getting it together I scratched/chipped and edge of the core. Should I even bother cleaning off the rest of the thermal compound and installing it in my pc?

What've you got to lose? Might as well try it. I've got a 800 mhz Duron in one of my machines that's chipped to hell and back, but it works fine. OTOH, I chipped the corner of a Tbird once and it's toast. My 5 year old son now has it as one of his spy gadgets.

Sure. It totally depends on how bad and where the chip is, it very well may still be alive.

Its an athlon thunderbird 1.2ghz. It happened on the middle of one of the edges. Theres nothing to loose except time. I just started to get all of the thermal compound crap off, but nothing is taking it off.

Rubbing alcohol works for me. AS3 comes right off.

It was some OEM stuff that was hard as a rock. It was pink and nothing softened it up until I hit it with some carb cleaner. Meanwhile I managed to scrath it up even more!

Naptha is available at any hardware store (~$5 for a quart can) and will cut through anything. Just make sure to clean the naptha with rubbing alcohol when you get it clean to remove any naptha residue.

Well, I fired it up and it booted to a 98 boot disk ok. I'll know in about an hour when I hook my hard drive back up (left it at girlfriends) if it's alive.

To add a piece of mind to u. I had an XP 2200+ rev A chipped on 3 corners + 1 in the middle-edge. If ran fine @ stock...now running 2 GHz (12 X 166)...stable.

From the pic...u will be fine. Mine is worst + its on 3 of the 4 corners.
