Just snagged an EVGA 460

Gotta say, it's not made anywhere near as well as the old EVGA 8800GTX 512 that it's replacing. The plastic cover that goes over the card just seems to be loose & ill-fitting. I stuck my finger on the fan to give it a whirl, and it hung up on a small wire loom right underneath.

I had to stick a pencil in there between the fins of the fan & push the wires down so the fan would spin. The 5 year old 8800 card has been in three computers, still runs great, and the tin cover on it is solid enough to make it a very comfortable card to work with.

Plus, the new card has 1 VGA output and 1 DVI where the old card had two DVI's.

Hmmm, I hope this thing works OK. It just ~HAS TO~ be better & faster than the old card. But my first impression kinda stinks.

Which EVGA 460 model has a standard VGA on it? I thought they were all dual dvi + mini hdmi.

I remember thinking the same thing when I got my Palit 460, thing reeked of cheapy cheapo plastic and lousy construction.

My evga EE 460 is very sturdy though and feels good. The 8800s were built like tanks.

My new EVGA 460 is fine. 2x DVI and 1 HDMI. It's the 1370 model, not the EE. It doesn't feel cheap and it runs like a raped ape.

Just got it today: EVGA GTX-460 p/n# 01G-P3-1365-TR
Oh, I see. That is a different design. I've only seen the reference and the blower model.

Yeah, that is rather odd to put a VGA output on a 460. I would think the people who buy a 460 are about 99% going to be using a dvi/hdmi lcd monitor.

Plus the other 1% can just use a DVI->VGA adapter

No, they're fine. Which model did you buy? I just got a pair of 1470s...they even came with evga's high flow bracket installed....weird... The pictures on Newegg show the reference bracket. Great bonus either way!

OP: Hope your card works out for you. Should be a huge upgrade if it does.

I know my eyes must be getting worse when I read this thread title as "Just shagged an EVGA 460."

Anyway I agree with you that EVGA is cheapening products. Their warranties are no longer all lifetime, and I was disappointed with price-gouging on 6850 and ordered an EVGA 460-768 only to have it ship with crappy plastic-based packaging. That shoddy packaging combined with Amazon's equally iffy packing materials (those air-filled plastic things) meant that a resistor literally came off the board. I noticed it as I lifted the board out of the plastic holder and heard rattling and looked down and saw the resistor. Ugh.

I've had better luck with EVGA in the past... customer service was better back then too. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Amazon though. If you get a bad product just call them(er...actually their system calls you after you enter your number). They've sent me replacement parts overnight for free(even a laptop once). Then just return the bad product within the allotted time with the prepaid shipping label they send you.... it's the way customer service should be everywhere.

I used to live near Amazon HQ and was even invited to participate in a user study one time, probably due to the huge volumes of things I bought from them. They did mess up one shipment to me, but I got that fixed. I also got them to pricematch, once.

Fast forward to 2009: Last year, I ordered several HDDs from 'zon and 'egg and only one was DOA. From 'zon.

In 2010: A few months ago I ordered a *new* headset from 'zon and it arrived with the packaging already opened. It was sealed and someone just opened it. They didn't even bother taping it back shut. I was appalled but didn't want to return the obvious refurb if it worked, but it was a BROKEN headset (right side speaker was almost inaudible). And *not new*. Then this EVGA/'zon thing happened.

The main reason why I continue to shop at Amazon, though, is what you said: customer service. If something is broken, I know I won't have to jump through 20 hoops to get my money back.

Mildly unrelated, but this kind of degradation is very widespread, so much so that I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that it's something to do with the economy.

I deal with customer service with HP and Dell all the time, and I have to echo blastingcaps' post. They do pretty much the same thing as Amazon.

I've had my laptop motherboard replaced a few times with faulty refurb ones. If it wasn't for their warranty I would never buy a Dell laptop-- it's fine that they recycle parts, but their quality control has gone downhill as of late (this applies to brand-new products as well).

Well, at least they package them appropriately...

It's the name of the game nowadays :\

My non-reference XFX 5850 feels like the shroud is made from tin-foil.

It does the trick though.

My 3850 came in that plastic clam shell. So did my 4850; they both arrived fine and work to this day. My 460 came in the same crappy plastic clam shell and so far, so good. My 4850 and 460 were packed in air bags, too. EVGA's warranty is still good depending upon the product you buy; 2-3-5 and Lifetime. No worries so long as thier CS upholds their end of the deal.

dvi ADAPTER? It's still an analog connection that way though, right?

Video cards usually have DVI-I ports. The I is for integrated, because they have analog VGA pins along with the digital ones. The adapter just turns those analog pins into a VGA port. Having a VGA port instead has no benefits except maybe cost.

After reading this entire thread and getting a drink, I refresh the page and read it as "Just snapped an EVGA 460"

I also find this to be true across the board.

EVGA has fallen off recently, and I have not purchased any products from any other nvidia board partners. But the plastic clamshell packaging irritates me; the card rattles around in there. I've actually purchased two EVGA GTX 460 1GB "1370-TR" models, and each contained different items - one had a mini-hdmi to hdmi converter, and the other just had a mini-hdmi to hdmi wire.

Plastic shell. Eh, that's all the shroud does now. Purely aesthetic. I did notice that the 460 is significantly lighter in weight then your standard card these days, so I wonder if that makes us think its built in a flimsier fashion?

The cooler on the GTX 460 is excellent, however, and easily holds my card below 70 at load even in SLI.

You get what you pay for. The 8800 gtx was the high end card of the day and the 460 is the middle to low end card. What did you expect?
