My Mom passed recently so we sold her 2013 Corrola LE with 5k miles on it, holy macaroni it listed Mon AM, by today I had fielded about seventy calls/texts/emails, some from as far away as NH. A few people asked me for an account # so could send me a deposit!. I guess the used car market is very tight right now and people do love those Toyota's, I asked, (and got) $10K for it, in reality I should have listed it for 12 and probably would have gotten that too. Crazy times I tell 'ya!.

Yeah, clearly you listed it too low if that's the case.

Sorry for your loss.
There was a paint situation though, she had gone through a Walgreen's drive-through, (before she stopped driving) and contacted one of those concrete guard poles which had made a few deep scratches on one side. Not enough to require bodywork but enough that it would not buff out, I'd guess $1,000 in damage.

OK, wow, I did one for my zip and added in the damage, it was $14.4K, insane, she paid $17 for it back in '14!..

I don't get it. On my 2012 Accord the Carvana estimate was something like $12k. The Carmax online estimate was under $10k. Something doesn't add up!

Yea, strange indeed, before I went the CL route I brought it over to Daytona Toyota, their best offer was $7K, I LOL'ed and walked, Rep said "that offer might not be there tomorrow", I said who gives a shit, it's a turd offer anyway, greedy a-hole's.

Just did a KBB/Autotrader evaul, it came out to $11,200 which is what I had seen last week, I just wanted a quick sale, would have been interesting to see if Carvana would actually pay $14.4K for an 8yr old base Corolla.

Yes It is crazy. I did a KBB on my Toyota Tacoma and it came in for a private party value more than what I paid for it New in 2012.

Toyota Corollas that fresh aren't even in the "pissing out oil" stage yet......

It also is before the plasticization of the Corolla and introduction of the new DI+port combo, computers in the engine bay, etc speedkar99 highlighted in a more recent Corolla.

Also guaranteed to not have tranny neglect issue.....low oil, noisy exhaust, the pissing of oil when seals start to fail...The only thing needed is suspension work after 90-120k.

Just for S+G i went to carvana and inquired about buying a 2013 corolla, the average about $13-14K which is what their used estimator valued the one I just sold. LOL, now I know why my phone was ringing like mad, interesting that the local Toyota dealer would only offer me $7K, had he offered 9 I would have bit.

Yea, they made the entire front end a plastic bag of crap, I don't like them at all.

Just sold a used car to Carvana for more than any sane person would pay by private party. Took less than 15 min and they barely looked it over.

Damm, sure wish I knew they were going nuts like that, I figured that since to local Toyota dealer would only go to $7 that a carmax/carvana type offer would be around $9 at max.

Since you have a Carvana account, can you run a sell estimate for me? If so, I'll send over the particulars. I don't feel like giving them my email at this time but now I'm curious if they are massively overpaying for cars as otho11 mentioned.

? You don't need an account. Just enter the VIN and some simple information.

EDIT: I guess you do in some cases? I tried our 2021 Ascent for fun and it asked to create an account. Not going to bother.

I just did this too and mine was modified. Was quite surprised.

These companies are trying to gobble up market share right now. You'll see posts like these on practically all car forums. There are many examples of people receiving more than they paid for vehicles.

Gobble up market share yes, but I really don't get their business model if they can't sell them for what they paid? It doesn't make sense.

Many dealers make as much or more from the financing side than the selling price listed side. That and the extra BS fees they charge. Most places add anywhere from $1500-3000 in fees now. So that 21k car might run 22-24k and that's before financing.

I was lucky and got my truck private party when car prices dropped during COVID. I can get at least 4k more for it now almost a year later.

Lots of car flippers and used car sales people doing side jobs on the private market in my town. Hot ticket item are Toyota Tacomas going for well over Bluebook.

I'm about 75% finished with a complete restoration on a '99 Taco, I have all the parts necessary for a complete A/C restoration and I'm just waiting for my scheduled vacation days to arrive so I can flog the rebuild in a 2 day session. After that's done all I have left is to drop the rear axle assy and rebuild with new gears and related parts including shocks and wheel bearings. It's got a year old paint job colored in 1H5 grey and ceramic sealed. And yes, it's a garage queen.

After that, I'm seriously considering selling it now that the prices have been looking really good for that model.

I'll use the cash to do a rear coil-over job on my restored '73 Vette with related kit parts for the front suspension and maybe install an injection setup to replace the 850cfm carb setup now sitting on a 406 ci. Dart motor.

I remember in January, Carvana was listing low mileage Tesla 3s (Standard range+) for $37k, which was very close to what new ones were selling for (ignoring state subsidies). I agree with you that it doesn't make any sense whatsoever, but presumably these companies are able to squeeze out a tiny profit.

Just handed Carvana my VIN and email, and they low-balled me an offer of $11,383 for a well-optioned 2014 BMW 328i, 68k miles. I realize these things depreciate like old Italian village homes, but it's low enough that I won't even have to think about it.
