Amortize $300 over 4 years, then like who cares.

Also I don't think 6.1/7.1 speakers have any advantage over good 5.1's, maybe someone else can correct me on that.

Sometimes I think even 5.1 is overkill. It's disappointing how few movies really take advantage of my fronts. I'm loving my new Fluance center though
WTH watches movies on their computer anyways? Anyways for my setup, it's perfect, my computer is hooked up to my reciever with 5.1 connections and the A/V devices like DVD player, PS2 etc. are also hooked up, so when I play PS2 games, it's on the TV, otherwise when I play PC games it's on the PC, they all get to benefit from 5.1 all with 1 set of speakers.

Would've done with a 4400+ and an XP-120. XP-120 cools better, pick your own fan.. etc etc...

7900GT is more than enough... voltmod, etc... With that kind of money, IW oul;d've gotten an eVGA. Better warranty =) You can put custom coolers on them too and still not void anything.

Moreover, Raptor? Good, but the big HD? I would've stuck with Hitachi. T7K250s kill competition and they are ahead of WD's aging technology that the Caviars are built upon. Jeebus. Also the memory I would'v egotten the best DDR at least.. 2x1gb OCZ Platinum EB PC-4000s.

I'm sorry. I could've bought 2 systems w/ equal or greater performance than the one you bought w/ a few tweaks. Sigh... $2.5K down the drain.

OP, enjoy your system you'll love it just as much as i love mine and get flamed for it. people only hate because they dont have the money to buy faster stock cpus. let them hate. i could have bought an opteron and oc'ed it also. but i'd rather just get a new cpu/system when faster ones come out or when i feel it is needed. Gl with your build if you've already ordered

Who watches movies on their PC? I do.

It might suck on your five year old 17inch CTR but on my brand new 23inch LCD it's just fine.

When have I bragged?

You people are funny. Everyone posts their new systems when they build them - I did the same thing.

I love all this feedback! People always love to tell you what you did wrong in their eyes.

ASUS A8N-SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
Antec Performance I P180 Silver
2 GENERIC 18" 2-Head Red SATA
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound
ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU
MITSUMI Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal USB 2.0 digital card reader with Floppy Drive
Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD4000KD 400GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive
CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 433 (PC 3500)
Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo 2000MHz
Creative SOUND BLASTER X-Fi Platinum 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card
BFG Tech BFGR79512GTXOCE Geforce 7900GTX 512MB GDDR3

A what better way of summing this all up with one simple word, "Waste".
Multiple reasons why this who rig is a "waste".
1. Conroe, by the looks of things conroe will be wiping the floor with this system
2. AM2, possibly AMD will release a conroe competitor processor, screwing you over just as equally.
3. Raptor is a waste.
4. Should have gotten an X1900XT at the minimum
5. Processor speed really isn't that important in a gaming machine
6. You have no real reason to upgrade yet, your system was lagging behind already well over a year ago, the difference between your current system "lagging behind NOW and three-four months from now isn't even tangible" so why not wait? It's not like you can't play current games or anything
7. Expect this system to never be upgraded, because you're at the end of the upgrade cycle if you build this system.

I know after spending $2500, the last thing i'd wanna hear is "waste", but i'd have to agree (for the most part). The conroe point, however, i wouldn't get too over zealous about, unless anyone has seen real, unbiased REAL WORLD peformance tests, we don't know how much it'll beat AMD's current offerings by. (I should state that, i think, at the VERY least, conroe will thrash Intel's current offerings, and most likely best AMD's by a margin, but not as high as Intel would like people to believe). Oh, and he can still upgrade video cards later on, or add a second one, so the upgrade path isn't completely blocked.

As for your build, i'd have gone with a 4400+ and an x1900xt, the performance difference would be negligable, and the price difference would be MUCH nicer. (Could have spent the money on a new monitor, if need be, or some better speakers to go with the X-Fi perhaps or hell, buy a gift for the girlfriend/wife (or buy a girlfriend/wife if you're so inclined, haha))

At the least, you'll definately love the system, your choices weren't wrong, just far from any real price/performance (which is what everyone loves).

i wouldnot worry about conroe. with physx cards coming out there less for cpus to do and also gaming bottleneck is the vidoe card not the cpu.

if you want an honest opinion, here is where you made your mistakes.

- the motherboard should have been the A8N32.
- the cooler is a waste of money, the 4 heatpipe stock AMD cooler would have done just as good if not better.
- corsair makes the worst and most expensive ram. next time stick to OCZ or crucial and get more performance for less money.
- that power supply is inadequate for this computer. I mean it is now, but I am only assuming that your gonna do a lot more gaming now that you CAN, and in the future you might want to add another GTX for SLI, which now you CANT do with that psu.
- the sound card is a waste, it is essentiall an Xtrememusic, and your just paying extra for the front bay, which adds a nice fat cable into your case to obstruct airflow. If you absolutely essentially need optical in/out then ignore this comment.
- BFG cards are the most expensive, althou they dont provide better performance then chaper competitors such as evga, XFX, or PNY.

thats my 2 cents, if I were you thats what I would have revised in my configuration. everything else looks pimp.

i would've gotten the x1900xt, single card motherboard, 4400+ or lower, and an enermax liberty, fortron, or seasonic s12 500w psu. but that's just me. still a good system.

Looks like a fine build to me. I don't think I would have chosen the same parts in a couple of cases there, but I wouldn't complain if they showed up at my door.

It's a good system, but badly balanced for a gaming PC. You will enjoy it.

You know, having an opinion is one thing. Telling someone they are foolish because they do not agree with and
follow it to the letter is another. Must be a lot of Christians posting here....

*edit by the way, nice rig. Good to see that you are not letting the haters get ya down!!

I can never understand why people have so much HD space. I use my cmputer as a DVR and 300MB is enough, WTF do you do with 500MB? Jeesh my 60GB laptop drive is like 1/3 full...

That's just for the compressed stuff. Raw data uncompressed could be well over one gig just for one file.

The two things i would of changed for sure would be the video card and the heatsink. Everything else is fine just because its based on the buyers decisions of what he wants. The reason why i say video card and heatsink is because the 1900xtx is cheaper and performs better. The stock heatsink for the 4800+ is probably better than the zalman and costs nothing.

no ppl usually ask before building and almost never afterwards unless they have some issues. so you are bragging.

Dude, people post "rate my rig" and brag posts all the time. The board is a community, and people gather around someone's new rig they same way the guys in the neighborhood wander over if you have a vette parked in the driveway. And you want them to, which is why it's in the driveway.

So lighten up.
