Just started running again but...

I've never been a runner, and actually the last time I ran was probably junior high/high school (pathetic, huh).. well, I'm trying to get myself into shape by running and I've run into the same problems. Shin splints to begin with.. although I've been running on a treadmill now and it helps (or it could be the shoes I'm now wearing)... Still have trouble with speed and stamina, but I try not to push myself... I can only jog/run/walk a mile at a time, but hopefully I'll start to improve the more I keep running. The hardest part though, is just going out and actually doing it. My ipod sure helps though or else running would be so boring....

For me at least the best part of every run is at the very end at about 1/2 mile away from home I push at a 110% sprint to make it home. My legs get wobbly, I don't know if I'm gonna make it, but I keep my mind focused on the goal... uhh sort of like sex

This makes every run feel worthwhile and enhances the runners high. Try it, but at the end don't collapse or sit down (cramps city), walk around until you get your breath back then take that well deserved shower.

Yes I had a problem called compartment syndrome. My shins would cramp up when I ran because the sheath around the muscle was not big enough to expand when exercising. It required surgery to fix.

I also have that problem. The operation is called a compartment release. It's a minor operation, but I have to get it done to both legs. I've already had them done to my right leg, and havn't felt the pain yet.

Left one still hurts though.
